Jonas is Golden in Overtime

Danielle Jonas was the hero as she headed the ball into the back of the net for the win.

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- While driving rain was coming down in overtime, Danielle Jonas delivered the golden goal in a 1-0 victory by the West Virginia Wesleyan (3-4-1, 3-3-0) women's soccer team against Fairmont State (2-5-0, 2-4-0) at Culpepper Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 3.

The Falcons had an early opportunity in the fourth minute when Alyssa Weaver snuck inside and dragged a shot to the left that was collected by Ally Moore. At halftime, the game was scoreless.

Heavy rain poured down throughout the second half. In the 59th minute, Natalie Pireu ripped a free kick that drilled the crossbar to just miss a goal. Moore made a fantastic save diving to her left during the 81st minute on a shot by Fairmont State's Ari Christiansen. Moore's fifth save of the contest helped force overtime.

Nearly six minutes into the first half of overtime, Pireu sent a perfect free kick into the six-yard box where Jonas headed the ball into the back of the net for the golden goal.

WVWC will head north to Frostburg State for a road match at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 6.
