Football Preview: West Virginia State

The Bobcats return home to play host to West Virginia State at Ross Field.

The Basics
The West Virginia Wesleyan football team returns home to Ross Field for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff against West Virginia State.

Quick Hits
  • The interim tag was removed on Sept. 15 as Dwayne Martin officially became the head coach of the WVWC football program.
  • Last time out on Oct. 2, Wesleyan fell at Wheeling, 38-0.
  • Jujuan Linzy caught five passes for 96 yards against West Liberty on Sept. 25. Linzy added three catches for 25 yards at Wheeling.
  • Deontre Logan led WVWC in tackles versus WLU with 10 total tackles including 1.0 tackle for loss. Logan added two tackles for loss and a sack at Wheeling on Oct. 2.
  • Kobe Vinegar and Shaq Freeman-Parks both recorded blocks on punts by West Liberty on Sept. 25.

  • Brubeck had a touchdown run in the 38-13 loss at West Virginia State in the 2021 spring season opener.
  • Taylor returned a kickoff back 88 yards for a touchdown last season at WVSU en route to earning MEC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Scouting West Virginia State
West Virginia State is 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the MEC after a 45-13 win over Alderson Broaddus on Oct. 2

Malik Newton averages 5.6 yards per carry on the ground for the Yellow Jackets with three touchdowns. Barry Hill leads West Virginia State with 22 catches and 303 yards, he also has found the endzone twice. Linebacker Payton Lunsford paces WVSU with 44 total tackles.

Former West Virginia University wide receiver John Pennington is in his fifth season in charge of the Yellow Jacket football program. Pennington got his coaching start at West Virginia Wesleyan as a graduate assistant from 2005-07 and received his Master's in Business Administration from WVWC.

WVSU defensive coordinator George Shehl served as the head football coach at West Virginia Wesleyan from 2013-15.
