Women's Basketball Preview: West Virginia State

WVWC women's basketball's lone contest of the week will be at West Virginia State on Saturday (Feb. 20).

The Basics
The West Virginia Wesleyan women's basketball team is scheduled to take on West Virginia State away from home in Institute, W.Va., on Saturday (Feb. 20) at 2 p.m.

• The game scheduled for Wednesday (Feb. 17) at Glenville State was canceled due to the Pioneers pausing team activities. 
• Senior forward Abi Gabauer scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a 68-57 road win against Davis & Elkins on Wednesday (Feb. 10). 
• Sophomore guard Courtney Wilfong has distributed six assists in four games this season, the latest occurrence was on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at Davis & Elkins. 
• Junior forward Malaika Kimmons recorded a double-double of 17 points, and 10 rebounds in a 74-54 victory over Wheeling on Wednesday (Feb. 3). 
• Senior guard Brittany Stawovy scored 17 points, grabbed nine rebounds and snagged three steals against Wheeling on Wednesday (Feb. 3). 
• Freshman Symphonie Bryant-Brown provided 16 points off of the bench to help propel WVWC past Wheeling on Wednesday (Feb. 3). 
• Stawovy recorded her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds at Notre Dame (Ohio) in a 76-66 loss on Monday, Feb. 1. 
• Stawovy scored a season-high 27 points and finished 10-for-10 at the free throw line in an 86-73 victory over Alderson Broaddus on Saturday (Jan. 30). 
• Gabauer bested her previous career-high of 24 points that was set her freshman year with 26 points against West Virginia State on Wednesday (Jan. 20). 
• Cierra Tolbert's father, Ray was the Big Ten Player of the Year at Indiana in 1981, was selected 18th overall in the NBA draft and played five seasons in the NBA. 
• Vicky Bullett enters her fifth season as the West Virginia Wesleyan head coach. The former All-American at Maryland and former WNBA No. 1 draft pick played six seasons in the WNBA. Bullett is a member of the Maryland Athletic Hall of Fame and Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. She helped Team USA to a gold medal in 1988. 
 
Scouting West Virginia State
West Virginia State is 6-6 overall this season coming off a high scoring, 104-93 loss to Concord on Wednesday (Feb. 17). 
 
Sophomore guard Destiny Fields is averaging a team-high 15.4 points per game and 7.1 rebounds per game this season for WVSU. She put together a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds on Jan. 20 in a 103-68 win at Wesleyan. 
 
Junior guard Charity Shears averages 13.7 points per game and has registered three performances this season of 24 points or more. 
 
Charles Marshall is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Yellow Jackets. Prior to taking the helm at West Virginia State, Marshall spent the previous three seasons from 2013-16 as the head women's basketball coach at Glenville State.
