Wheeling Fends Off Wesleyan

The Bobcats kept battling and never went away in a home loss to Wheeling.

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- Ross Young put together another double-double, but Wheeling (1-4) shot lights out to defeat the West Virginia Wesleyan (0-9) men's basketball team, 85-77 inside the Rockefeller Center on Wednesday (Feb. 3). 
 
Leaders for WVWC
Young scored 17 points and ripped down 10 rebounds. Jaylin Reed scored a team-high 18 points and collected seven boards. Daylin Lee scored 11 of his 16 total points in the second half. 
 
Jaret Mullooly made four shots from beyond the arc for the third time this season to finish with 12 points. Braeden McGrew added 10 points off of the bench. 
 
Leaders for Wheeling
Jarett Haines scored a game-high 21 points and distributed seven assists. Jay Gentry was 4-for-7 from long range to wrap up with 19 points. 
 
Team Stats
The Cardinals shot 51.9 percent (27-for-52) from the field including 12 made 3-pointers. Wesleyan finished 11-for-13 from the charity stripe and owned a 35-33 rebounding edge. 
 
Inside the First Half
Wheeling came out firing and grabbed an early 12-5 advantage at the 16:29 mark after a triple by Jordan Beale. Young was ready for a putback dunk with 12:02 left in the first half as the Bobcats trailed by a point, 17-16. 
 
Mullooly dialed up a corner 3-pointer to keep WVWC within one possession trailing 24-21 with 8:19 to go before halftime. The senior sharpshooter nailed another trey to again bring Wesleyan within three (31-28) as 3:30 was left on the clock for the opening half. The Cardinals closed the first half on an 8-2 run to lead at the half, 42-32.
 
Inside the Second Half
Lee went on a tear to begin the second half and scored nine points in the first five minutes of the period. The junior from Toronto, Canada, drilled a 3-pointer as the Bobcats cut the deficit to 49-45. 
 
Wheeling seemed to always have an answer when Wesleyan started to gain momentum. The Cardinals led by as many as 18 points, but WVWC clawed back as Cameron Ramage converted a layup on a hard drive to the hoop to bring the home team within five (72-67) as 2:41 remained in regulation. 
 
The Cardinals sealed the game at the free throw line in an 85-77 decision.

WVWC men's basketball is scheduled to head to West Liberty on Sunday (Feb. 7) for a 4:30 p.m. tip-off.
