BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Wesleyan (0-2) football team lost its home opener to Concord (1-0) by a final score of 52-14 at Ross Field on Saturday, March 27.
Leaders for WVWC
Kenny Lewis Jr. hauled in three receptions for 71 yards and two touchdowns.
Shaq Freeman-Parks rushed the ball nine times for 52 yards.
Renard Matthews led the Bobcats with eight tackles including two for loss.
Jasean Calloway and
Spencer Jenkins each made an interception.
Leaders for Concord
Jack Mangel tossed five touchdown passes and a total of 310 yards. Darius Smith carried the ball 11 times for 102 yards and a touchdown.
Tywan Pearce grabbed 10 receptions for 148 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Teddy Marshall caught five passes for 100 yards and a score. Jarod Bowie also scored two touchdowns off a total of seven catches.
Inside the First Half
Concord scored on its first drive of the season as Mangel found Bowie from 18 yards away in the right corner of the end zone with 10:17 left in the opening quarter.
Wesleyan quarterback
Josh Stewart was intercepted by Marcellus Saint, who returned it to the 18-yard line with 3:37 remaining in the first quarter. Dillon Howie punched it in from a yard away on the ensuing drive as Concord jumped out to a 14-0 lead after one quarter.
The Mountain Lions had great starting field position again the Bobcats muffed the kickoff. Pearce snagged a pass from Mangel in the back of the endzone for a 21-0 advantage for the visitors only eight seconds into the second quarter.
WVWC answered with a 65-yard drive sparked by Freeman-Parks on the ground. On fourth and one from the Concord 5-yard line, Stewart fired left to Lewis Jr. to get the Bobcats on the board with 9:33 left in the first half.
Concord scored two more touchdowns (35-7) in the second quarter and was deep in Wesleyan territory again in the final moments of the first half when Calloway came down with a pick after the ball was deflected.
Inside the Second Half
Following a 27-yard field goal on Concord's opening drive of the second half, Stewart found Lewis Jr. for a 59-yard touchdown connection after Lewis Jr. took off to the endzone.
The Mountain Lions only needed one play as well to answer as Mangel threw a dart to Pearce over the middle for a 60-yard touchdown. Concord controlled a 45-14 lead with 11:57 left in the third quarter.
