Extra Innings Win Caps Off Successful Weekend

Timely hitting helped WVWC softball sweep West Liberty on the road.

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Wesleyan (12-8) softball team took control of game one and held on before an extra innings victory sealed a doubleheader sweep of West Liberty (21-11) at the Hilltopper Softball Complex on Sunday, April 18.

Game One (WVWC 5, West Liberty 2)
Behind 1-0, Wesleyan took the game over in the top of the fourth inning. An error with the bases loaded allowed Lauryn King to score the tying run. The next batter, Molly Osborne was hit by a pitch to bring in another run. Brooke Clark drew a bases-loaded walk as the Bobcats led 3-1 after four innings.

King belted a 2-run homer to left center for some insurance in the top of the seventh.

Abigail O'Shields (6-4) went the distance only allowing one earned run on three hits with two strikeouts.

Game Two (WVWC 7, West Liberty 5)
The Bobcats trailed 1-0 early in game two as well, but Molly Osborne gave the visitors the lead on a 2-run double to left in the top of the second. Clark slammed a 2-run homer over the left field wall as Wesleyan all of a sudden had a 4-1 advantage.

West Liberty scored twice in the third and fourth innings to regain a 5-4 edge after four innings.

In the top of the fifth, Kennedy Cowart placed the game-tying single down the left field line.

Extra innings were needed to decide game two. Osborne delivered the go-ahead 2-run single to score Kelley Bourne and Kiley Turner in the top of the eighth.

Paige Maltby (2-1) pitched all eight innings and picked up a pair of strikeouts.
