Volleyball Preview: California (Pa.) & PSAC/MEC Crossover

Bobcat volleyball prepares to play four PSAC schools in the span of four days.

The Basics
The West Virginia Wesleyan volleyball team (0-4) continues its season with four matches scheduled versus Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference teams.
 
On Wednesday (Sept. 15), the Bobcats will travel to California, Pa. for a midweek match versus the Vulcans at 7 p.m. Wesleyan is scheduled to travel to Mercyhurst on Friday (Sept. 17) for a road match at 7 p.m. WVWC will then play two matches on Saturday (Sept. 18). The 'Cats will play Shepherd at noon in Erie, Pa., and then play at Edinboro for a 5 p.m. match.
 
Quick Hits
  • Junior outside hitter Joelle Lalla led the Bobcats in kills and blocks at the Flagler Saints Classic. Lalla had 21 kills and 11.0 total blocks in four matches.
  • Madison Boswell collected 14 kills and six service aces in her first collegiate matches. Boswell is an outside hitter from Ronceverte, W.Va.
  • Payton Hefner distributed 48 assists at the Flagler Saints Classic. Maddi Carpenter added 19 assists for the Bobcats.
  • All-MEC Second Team and MEC All-Freshman Team honoree Autumn Molenhouse accumulated 33 digs in her first four matches as a sophomore.
  • WVWC volleyball head coach Nancy Wheeler returns to her alma mater, California (Pa.) on Wednesday. 
 
Scouting California (Pa.)
The Vulcans hold a record of 4-4 this season. The Vulcans have a 3-2 record versus Mountain East Conference teams. Cal U has wins versus Alderson Broaddus, Davis & Elkins, and Frostburg State. Fairmont State and West Liberty defeated the Vulcans earlier this year.
 
Two Cal U hitters have over 60 kills: Sarah Moehring and Alexa Malloy. The Vulcans primarily use two setters. Sarah Benson has 122 assists and Marley Goff has 87 assists. Sophia Johnson leads the Vulcans with 36.0 blocks. Three Cal U players have double-digit service aces, Benson (13), Moehring (12), and Goff (11). California (Pa.) volleyball is led by Peter Letourneau.
 
Scouting Mercyhurst
The Lakers have a 3-5 record in their first eight matches. Mercyhurst lost to Notre Dame (Ohio) 2-3 at the Cavalier Invitational in North Canton, Ohio last weekend.
 
Beth Brady, a senior outside hitter from Cleveland, Ohio, has 96 kills in her first eight matches of her senior career, leading the Lakers. Libero Hannah Vuylsteke leads Mercyhurst with 178 digs and 14 service aces. Two Lakers have eclipsed the 100 assists mark: Alexa Mitchell (155) and Isabella McCaffrey. Ryan Patton begins his 18th season at the helm of Mercyhurst volleyball.
 
Scouting Shepherd
The Rams have gotten off to a 6-1 start to kickoff the 2021 season. As a team, Shepherd has committed 97 attack errors, while their opponents have made 196 attack errors.
 
The Rams carry 13 players on their roster, and five Rams players have freshman eligibility. Mikaylah Hoy is the kill leader for Shepherd. Hoy has 74 kills in seven matches. Redshirt-freshman Claire Ellis leads the Rams with 112 digs. Victoria Nicholes is the Rams' setter and has accumulated 218 digs. Georgia Ohmke has totaled 37.0 blocks and had 8.0 blocks in a match versus Goldey-Beacom. Alex Hoekstra is the head coach for Shepherd.
 
Scouting Edinboro
The Fighting Scots won all four of their matches in the California Vulcan Invitational last weekend. Edinboro lost only one set the entire weekend and defeated Shippensburg, Frostburg State, Bloomsburg, and West Liberty.
 
Three Fighting Scots have more than 30 kills, with Bella Burrelli leading with 46 kills. Burrelli added nine service aces for Edinboro at the Cal U tournament. The top-five dig leaders for Edinboro have more than 30 digs. Alicia Eldredge leads the Fighting Scots with 43 digs and freshman Abby Monn is close behind with 42 digs. Eldredge facilitates the Fighting Scots' offensive attack and had 141 assists last weekend in California (Pa.). The head coach for Edinboro is Missy Soboleski.
 
Up Next
The Bobcats open up MEC play on Tuesday, September 28 in a road contest versus Charleston at 7 p.m. Wesleyan's first home match of the season will be on Friday, October 1 versus Concord at 7 p.m.
