The Basics
The West Virginia Wesleyan football team returns to the gridiron at Concord on Saturday (Sept. 18). Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. (ET) from Callaghan Stadium in Athens, W.Va.

Quick Hits

• The interim tag was removed on Sept. 15 as Dwayne Martin officially became the head coach of the WVWC football program.
• Last time out in the season opener on Thursday, Sept. 2, Drake (Division-I FCS) defeated the Bobcats, 45-3.
• Cameron Lomax recorded a team-high 11 tackles in the season opener.
• Freshman quarterback Nathan Payne made his first collegiate start.
• Freshman kicker Liam Depp made his first collegiate field goal at Drake on Sept. 2.
• Devin Taylor was named MEC Co-Special Teams Player of the Week last season after an 88-yard kickoff return touchdown in the 2021 spring season opener at West Virginia State on March 13. Taylor and teammate Justin McIntyre are both on the Wesleyan men's track team.
• On the offensive line, Trey Milam and Jake Folland will both serve as team captains.

Scouting Concord
Concord lost its season opener on Thursday (Sept. 9) at Glenville State, 17-10. Concord hasn't hosted a home football game in 672 days.

The Mountain Lions recovered four fumbles in the setback and recorded 9.5 tackles for loss including 2.5 tackles for loss from Dwain Porterfield.

Quarterback Jack Mangel threw for 402 yards in the loss at Glenville State on Sept. 9. He went 36-for-51 to set the program record for completions and attempts. Sophomore wide receiver Jarod Bowie finished with 15 receptions for 204 yards and a touchdown against the Pioneers. Freshman running back Justin Lee made eight catches.

Dave Walker enters his second season as the Concord head football coach after a successful run as head coach at Martinsburg High School. He earned his first win as a Mountain Lion last spring at West Virginia Wesleyan. Current Concord defensive coordinator Logan Williams was the defensive coordinator at West Virginia Wesleyan in 2019.
