Hudson Strikes Out 11 Against Frostburg State

Hannah Hudson struck out 11 Frostburg State batters in 9.0 innings on Sunday (Mar. 20).

BUCKHANNON, W.Va.-- The West Virginia Wesleyan's (11-8-1, 2-2 MEC) Hannah Hudson punched out 12 Frostburg State Bobcats (9-6, 4-0 MEC) on Saturday (Mar. 20) at Culpepper Field. However, the Orange and Black dropped both games of the doubleheader losing 6-5 in game one and 6-3 in game two.

Game One
WVWC found themselves in a 4-0 hole heading to the bottom half of the third inning. However, Destiny Alvarado and Grace Hightowers woke up the Wesleyan bats with back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Morgan Norris was hit by an FSU offering to load up the bases. The next batter, Alli Robinson, delivered with the bags full to plate Alvarado but Hightower was thrown out at the plate to make it 4-1. Taylor Swartz got the other two baserunners across as she would line a ball to right-center, making it 4-3 FSU.

FSU would score in the top of the fourth to make it 5-3 before WVWC would plate runs in the fifth and sixth inning to tie the game at 5. Kaitlyn Rizor lined a ball to center in the fifth to score Swartz, and Molly Osborne hammered a ball over the centerfield fence in the sixth even the score.

Neither team could manage anything in the seventh to send the game to extra innings. Similar results in the eighth saw the contest lengthened by another inning. However, FSU would break the deadlock in the ninth, scoring a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 6-5. WVWC would be retired in order in the bottom half to end the game.

Hudson (5-2) received the loss in game one. The senior threw all nine innings and surrendered nine hits and five earned runs to go with her 11 strikeouts.

Game Two
Like game one, FSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead after a rbi double and a three-run home run in the first. WVWC would respond in the bottom half as Norris would score on a misplayed flyball by the FSU outfielder to make it 4-1. FSU answered back in the fourth, scoring an unearned run on an error in the outfield to make it 5-1.

In the fourth, Robinson led off with a single to left. The next batter, Swartz, homered to deep left field to trim the FSU lead to two. However, WVWC couldn't manufacture any more runs as FSU would sweep the doubleheader.

Abigail O'Shields (3-3) was credited with the loss in game two giving up three earned in 0.1 innings. Kendall Stoffel gave the Orange and Black a strong outing in relief of O'Shields, throwing 6.2 innings allowing one earned run on four hits, and striking out a pair.
