Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Wesleyan Drops Fifth Straight this Season to Undefeated Wheeling

Looking for a much-needed victory, the Bobcats women's basketball team (2-5, 0-4 MEC) hosted Wheeling University Saturday, but fell 58-51 to the Cardinals.

Wesleyan kept the game close despite a poor three-point shooting performance of 4-of-19 (21 percent) and a team average 36 percent from the field. But Cardinals shooting was held in check long enough to give the Bobcats a chance in the fourth quarter, coming within six points with 1:05 on the clock on a jumper by Shelby Genes (13 points).

Emma Witt again led the Bobcat scoring attack. Playing all but two minutes of the game, the sophomore guard from Staunton, Va. dropped 7-of-16 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws for 19 points. Witt also recorded eight rebounds to lead all Bobcats. Sydney Baird, Wesleyan's go-to deep shooter, struggled from beyond three with a 1-of-6 performance but added nine points to the Bobcat effort.

Wesleyan hosts Salem University in a non-conference game Wednesday, Dec. 6. Tipoff in Buckhannon is 5:30 and admission is free.
