BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan Baseball team lost at home to Shepherd yesterday evening in a non-conference doubleheader, losing 17-1 in the first game and 10-1 in game two. Shepherd had 32 hits between the two games while holding the Bobcats to just eight total hits.
Game 1Â
Anthony Hernandez opened the game with consecutive strikeouts and ended the inning with a groundout to third. The top of the 2nd wasn't as kind to Hernandez, walking the first two batters of the inning and allowing an RBI single up the middle. Shepherd scored another run on a wild pitch to take a 2-0 lead. Thatcher Poteat singled to start the bottom half of the 2nd and eventually scored on an Eddie Rueda RBI single to trim the lead in half. Â
The Rams added another run in the top of the 3rd on a HBP after loading the bases on a pair of singles and a walk. Wesleyan had singles in both the 3rd and 4th inning, leaving runners stranded and going scoreless. SU blew the game open with three runs apiece in the 5th and 6th, making it 9-1. After a slow offensive bottom of the 6th for the Bobcats, the Rams put up eight runs in the top of the 7th. Wesleyan went down 1-2-3 to end the game as Shepherd won 17-1.Â
Zach Doss led Shepherd with 5 RBI and three hits while Ross Mulhall had four hits. Seven other Rams had at least 1 RBI. John Cummings went five innings, securing the win with a stat line of one run (earned) on four hits and two strikeouts.
Eddie Rueda had an RBI while Thatcher Poteat recorded two hits for the Bobcats. Anthony Hernandez took the loss after three innings of work, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks. He also struck out five.
Game 2Â
A sacrifice fly plated the first run of the game for the Rams in the top of the 1st, followed by Cole Shearer's RBI single up the middle in the bottom half of the 1st to make it 1-1. Walks were costly in the top of the 2nd, walking four-straight batters to score their second run of the game. Preston Todd singled in the bottom of the second but was thrown out trying to steal. The Rams made it 3-1 in the top of the 3rd after a single and consecutive stolen bases led to an RBI double.
The motto of scoring a run every inning continued for Shepherd in the top of the 4th, plating a run on an RBI single. SU blew the game wide open just like they did in the first game, scoring six runs in the top of the 5th to put the game out of reach. The Bobcat offense slowed down the remainder of the game as Shepherd took game two 10-1.
Sam Daggers went 4-4 with 3 RBI to lead the team while Cole Daugherty and Ross Mulhall both added 2 RBI. Eli Lam pitched five innings, getting the win while allowing one run (earned) on four hits and striking out five.
Sam Ingram, Eddie Rueda, Cole Shearer and Preston Todd all recorded a hit as Shearer had the lone RBI. Luke White took the loss after just two innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on two hits and walking five.
