Bobcats Split With Glenville State To End Regular Season

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan Softball team split with Glenville State this afternoon, dropping the first game 2-1 and winning the regular season finale 6-0. The Bobcats totaled 16 hits with GSU having 15 total hits on the day.

Game 1
The Pioneers put the pressure on early, leading the game off with a walk and a single. Hudson escaped by setting the next three down in order. Glenville State put together more offense in the top of the 2nd, singling back-to-back and using an error by the Bobcat defense to plate the first run of the game. GSU then scored on a dribbler in the infield, taking a 2-0 lead. Wesleyan cut into the lead in the bottom of the 2nd with an Alli Robinson solo HR to center.

The Bobcats threatened again in the bottom of the 4th, putting a runner at third with just one out. A hard-hit grounder put Taylor Swartz in a tough position and allowed the third baseman to tag her out for a force play at third. Neither team gathered much of anymore offense for the remainder of the game as the Bobcats couldn't get another runner in scoring position in the 6th or 7th innings. The Pioneers escaped with a 2-1 win.

Ashton Palmer led the way with three hits for the Pioneers while the RBIs were brought in by Haylee Stevens and Addison Aguiniga. Kylie Burdick was the winning pitcher, going seven innings and allowing one run (earned) on five hits and one strikeout.

Alli Robinson had two hits, including her solo HR to lead the Bobcats. Hannah Hudson also went seven innings, giving up two runs (unearned) on nine hits and four walks while striking out six.

Game 2
After recording a pair of hits in the opening innings of the game, the Bobcats exploded for six runs in the 3rd inning. Andie Dizon and Kiley Turner hit back-to-back RBI doubles, followed by an RBI single by Alyssa Souders and RBI double from Bella Posey. Wesleyan scored their final two runs of the inning on an RBI single from Hallie Dinklocker and a wild pitch that allowed Bella Posey to cross.

WVWC loaded the bases in the bottom of the 4th with a chance to put even more runs up on the board but a flyout to center ended the inning. The Pioneers would make things interesting in the top of the 5th until Abigail O'Shields avoided damage once again. Wesleyan closed out the game strong, securing the 6-0 victory.

Katelyn Richardson and Kaelyn Stenger both recorded two hits for the Pioneers. Madison Thimmes took the loss after being ran out of the game just 2.2 innings in. She gave up six runs (earned) on eight hits and no walks.

Grace Smith, Kiley Turner and Alyssa Souders all had two hits for Wesleyan with five different Bobcats finishing with an RBI. Abigail O'Shields picked up the win with a complete game shutout, allowing six hits and striking out five.

Wesleyan will be at the MEC Tournament May 5-7 in Salem, Va.
