Baseball Takes One In Four-Game Series With Pioneers

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan Baseball team lost three out of four games this weekend to MEC South Divisional foe Glenville State. On Saturday, the Pioneers took the first game 12-7 and the Bobcats won game two 8-4. GSU took both games today 14-3 and 10-3.

SATURDAY
Game 1
With both teams being quiet in the 1st inning, Glenville State put up four runs in the top of the 2nd on just two hits. An error, two walks and two HBP helped the Pioneers score three of those runs. Consecutive singles set up Eddie Rueda, who also singled to bring Cole Shearer home, trimming it to 4-1 after two innings.

In the top of the 3rd, GSU loaded the bases and Zac Bayor took full advantage, hitting a grand slam. Cole Shearer hit an RBI single in the bottom half of the 3rd after back-to-back errors by the Pioneer defense. The lead would be extended to 10-2 in the top of the 4th but the Bobcats answered back with two runs of their own on an RBI single from Devin Johnson and a passed ball. GSU scored a run in both the 5th and 6th inning to bolster their lead to eight.

The Bobcats scored on a 2-run single from Cole Shearer in the 6th and another run on an RBI single from Devin Johnson in the 7th. A strikeout closed the first game of the series with the Pioneers taking game one 12-7.

Zac Bayor's 6 RBI and Carlos De Jesus' four hits led the Pioneer bats. Austin Corn earned the victory after 4.2 innings of work, giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits and three walks.

Cole Shearer went 3-4 with 3 RBI to lead the Bobcats. Devin Johnson added 2 RBI and Eddie Rueda finished with 1 RBI. Drew Evans was handed the loss, going three innings and allowing eight runs (five earned) on four hits, five walks and three HBP.

Game 2
The Bobcats put runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the 1st but a strikeout and groundout got the Pioneers out of the early trouble. Glenville State scored the first runs of the game once again, plating three in the top of the 4th on a passed ball and a 2-run HR. An error by the Pioneer defense allowed Cole Shearer to cross in the bottom of the 4th. A sac fly put GSU back up three in the top of the 5th but the Bobcat offense came alive the following inning.

In the bottom of the 6th, Wesleyan scored seven runs on seven hits and an error, including all the runs being scored with two outs. Julio Aguilar got it started with an RBI single to right, followed by Josh Jenkins singling in the infield to plate a run. Luke Burner's single down the right field line tied the game up at 4 and Sam Ingram was HBP to take the lead. Jack Tilton singled up the middle to plate two and Sam Ingram came home on a steal to make it 8-4 after six innings. Glenville State had a runner on in the top of the 7th but weren't able to do anything with it as WVWC won the second game 8-4.

Zach Morris had 2 RBI to lead the Pioneers with Ryan Rodriguez and Zach Laurie recording two hits. Noah Petrovich took the loss after entering the 6th in relief, giving up three runs (earned) on three hits and hitting one.
