Lacrosse Strong Offensive Performance Stops Westminster in Buckhannon

The Bobcats' Talia Berardo continued her Mountain East Conference leading shot bombardment, adding another 10 against visiting Westminster College (Pa.) to help lead West Virginia Wesleyan to a 16-10 victory Saturday in Buckhannon.

Berardo's shot total of 83 includes 40 goals, six of which went in the net against the visiting Titans.

After Westminster grabbed an early lead when Nina Rascona scored on an assist from Samantha Reed only 66 seconds into the game, Wesleyan countered with four before the end of the first quarter. Erin Mobley and Berardo each scored one and Anna Grace Prophett scored twice.

The Titans turned it up in the second quarter to outduel the Bobcats 5-2 in goals to go into the half locked at six goals each.

Wesleyan was troubled in the second half by numerous foul calls that, at times, left them a player or two down on the field. In total, Wesleyan was called for 14 fouls while Westminster was not called for any.

At the start of the third, the game momentum changed to the Titans and with four minutes gone, Westminster was up 9-7 on a Morgan Reidy goal at 11:01. But that would be the last point for Westminster as the Bobcats scored nine unanswered through the third and fourth quarters to go up 16-9 with 5:24 left in the game. The Titans added a late goal in the final four minutes when the Bobcats were down two players in the penalty box.

Scoring the first hat trick of her Bobcats career was Anna Grace Prophett. Mobley totaled two goals on six shots. Kaitlyn Canby also scored twice and had one assist.

Wesleyan heads on the road to Frostburg State University Wednesday, Mar. 27 for a 6 p.m. match with its Bobcat counterparts.
