Softball Falls To Southwest Minnesota State

In a competitive softball contest, Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) emerged victorious over West Virginia Wesleyan College (WVWC), securing a 6-3 win in a game that saw both teams display moments of brilliance.

The game began with SMSU taking an early lead in the top of the first inning. Paris Van Dyke singled to right field, driving in Riley Russell from third and giving the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage. SMSU extended their lead in the second, as Riley Kramolisch reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on the throw. A throwing error by WVWC's catcher allowed Kramolisch to score, unearned, bringing the score to 2-0.

WVWC responded in the third inning with a clutch performance. Andie Dizon doubled to left center, driving in three runs and giving the Bobcats a 3-2 lead. Hallie Dinklocker, Alyssa Rohr, and Josi Fix all crossed the plate for WVWC on the play, making it a pivotal moment for the Bobcats.

However, SMSU quickly regained control. In the bottom of the third, Lexi Ingalls grounded out, allowing Kaylee Miller to score and tie the game at 3-3. Then, Kramolisch came through with a key single to second base, driving in two more runs, as Hafermann and Miller both crossed the plate. With that, SMSU took a 5-3 lead.

The Mustangs continued to add to their advantage in the sixth. Abby Russell singled to shortstop, plating Hafermann to make it 6-3. From there, SMSU's pitching staff, led by Karlie Miller, held strong.

Miller (5-3) earned the win after a solid 5.2 innings of work, allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits, with five strikeouts. Jordyn Marsh came in for the save, throwing 1.1 scoreless innings to close out the game. On the other side, Josi Fix (0-5) was charged with the loss for WVWC after giving up five earned runs on five hits in three innings of work. Kelsi Brown pitched well in relief, allowing just one run on two hits in three innings.
