Virginia State Overpowers Wesleyan in 21-7 Victory

ETTRICK, Va. — Virginia State put on a dominant display on their home turf Saturday afternoon, beating West Virginia Wesleyan 21-7.
 
Virginia State opened the contest with 11 goals in the first quarter from eight different scorers. Kayla Carroll-Williams led the charge with four first-half goals, including a first-quarter hat trick. Sophia Toye and Nakiyah Jones each chipped in two goals in the opening 30 minutes, while Carea Tuck and Aniyah White directed the offense with crisp passing.
 
Wesleyan's offensive highlight came from Nyah Elmer, who posted a team-high four points (2 goals, 2 assists) and added a game-leading eight draw controls, showcasing both skill and hustle. She assisted on goals by Emma Adcock and Raveena Navalgund, who each found the net once more in the second half.
 
Ashlyn LaPlante also had a solid outing, notching a goal and an assist while converting Wesleyan's only successful free-position attempt late in the fourth quarter.
 
Eleven different players found the back of the net for Virginia State. Defensively, State was nearly perfect in clears, going 25-for-25, and forced 24 turnovers from Wesleyan. Keeper Ilyana Jones posted eight saves in a complete-game effort.
