BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Carlie Ice iced the game when her header in the 82nd minute broke a scoreless tie and lifted West Virginia Wesleyan women's soccer to a 1-0 Mountain East Conference win over Concord on Wednesday night at Culpepper Stadium, the Bobcats' final home match of the season.
The Lady Bobcats (7-7-2, 7-6-1 MEC) clinch a top 4 seed in the MEC South and a berth to the Mountain East Conference tournament in November. The Mountain Lions fall to 4-10-2 overall and 4-8-2 in MEC play.
Ice had checked into the match in the 79th minute. Three minutes later, Isabella Mazza sent in a free kick that came in result of a Concord foul right outside the box, and Ice headed it in for her second goal of the season.
Goalkeeper Reyna Dalton continued her dominance and kept the match scoreless until then and throughout the rest of the match, playing all 90 minutes. Dalton finished the night making 11 saves, five in the first half and six in the second. Concord worked hard to put one past Dalton, out shooting Wesleyan 21-11 and having an 11-5 edge in shots on goal, including a 14-4 advantage in shots in the second half. Natalie Carlock, Leah-Rose Ireland, Kierra Hoiler, and freshman Mallory Hughes all played the entire 90 minutes to help anchor the Lady Bobcat defense.
Ice put both of her shots on goal. Ayan Ahmed led Wesleyan with three shots, and Kierra Hoiler had two shots with one on goal. Concord's Stephanie Tovar and Ella Rowell each led the Mountain Lions with five shots, and Daisy Cook had three shots on goal. There were 107 fans in attendance.
Wesleyan heads on the road for their next match on Sunday, Oct. 25, at noon as they face the Bears of Shawnee State in Portsmouth, Ohio.
