GLENVILLE, W.Va. – West Virginia Wesleyan volleyball won a five-set Mountain East Conference match at Glenville State on Tuesday night, 3-2 (25-18, 12-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-11), at the Waco Center.
    The Bobcats improve to 7-12 overall and 3-3 in MEC play. The Pioneers fall to 9-9, 2-4 MEC.
    Wesleyan (7-11, 3-3 MEC) started out strong hitting .429 in the opening set to take it 25-18. Glenville State (9-9, 2-4 MEC) then bounced back and won the next two sets, 25-12 and 25-21, to move one set from the win. The Bobcats were able to hang on and stay alive with a 25-22 victory in set four. In the fifth set, Wesleyan was able to take control and finish what they started, hitting .364 while holding the Pioneers to .105 to close it out 15-11.
    Senior Bhrooke Axe led Wesleyan with 17 kills and five blocks. MacKenna Halfin added 13 kills and 14 digs, while Emily Denison put up 12 kills, three blocks, two aces and a match-high 17 digs. Sabrina Carleton chipped in nine kills.
    Setters Mia Myers and Liliana Beckstedt were everywhere dishing out the ball handing out 26 and 25 assists, respectively. Emonie Fennell anchored the back row with 15 digs.
    Wesleyan finished with 58 kills to Glenville State's 53 and held advantages in digs (76-65) and blocks (8-5). The Bobcats won despite being outserved 10-6 in aces.
    For the Pioneers, Gracie Brown led all players with 18 kills, and Juliana Nunez added 16 kills and six aces. Irmak Bezek had 44 assists, and Kassie Swink led the match with 18 digs.
    The Bobcats returns home to the Rockefeller Center this homecoming weekend to host Wheeling on Friday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m., and West Liberty on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m.
