Bobcats Drop Doubleheader at Point Park

The West Virginia Wesleyan baseball team opened Mountain East Conference play on Friday with a doubleheader at EQT Park, falling to Point Park University in both contests. The Pioneers claimed the opener 4–1 before completing the sweep with a 12–0 victory in the nightcap.

Game One: Point Park 4, West Virginia Wesleyan 1
The Pioneers struck first in the bottom of the second inning. After a single from Luis Gonzalez and another base hit by Olindo Pezzone, Felix Rodriguez lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home the game's first run and give Point Park a 1–0 lead.

Point Park extended the advantage in the fourth inning when Pezzone launched a solo home run to left field. Later in the inning, Carlos de la Vega delivered an RBI single to push the lead to 3–0.

West Virginia Wesleyan answered in the fifth inning. Josiah Segura led off with a single and advanced into scoring position before Coleman Cross drove him in with a sacrifice fly to right field, cutting the deficit to 3–1.

The Pioneers added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Felix Rodriguez reached base and eventually scored on another sacrifice fly from de la Vega to make the score 4–1.

Wesleyan mounted a late threat in the seventh inning, loading the bases with one out, but Point Park reliever Ethan Parker induced a game-ending double play to seal the win.

Grant Shumaker paced the Bobcats offensively with two hits, while Cross added the lone RBI. Segura and Adrian Amezquita each recorded hits as Wesleyan finished with six hits in the game.

On the mound, Drew Evans took the loss after allowing three runs in 3.2 innings of work. Drake Long provided relief, throwing the final 2.1 innings.

Game Two: Point Park 12, West Virginia Wesleyan 0
The Pioneers carried their momentum into the second game, breaking the contest open with two big innings en route to a 12–0 victory.

Point Park scored in the bottom of the first when Trevor Jones delivered an RBI double to give the home team an early 1–0 lead.

The game turned in the fourth inning as the Pioneers capitalized on several Wesleyan defensive miscues. Point Park pushed across four runs in the frame, extending the advantage to 5–0.

The Pioneers then erupted for six more runs in the fifth inning. Key hits from Carlos de la Vega, Trevor Jones, and Nicholas Briones highlighted the rally as Point Park stretched the lead to 11–0. They added one more run in the sixth inning to close out the scoring.

Point Park starter Harold Boyce was dominant, tossing a complete-game no-hitter while striking out five to earn the victory.

Anthony Hernandez started for the Bobcats and was charged with the loss after working 4.1 innings. Nolan Slaughter and Cullen Cairns combined to finish the game in relief.
