Game Recap: Softball |

Wesleyan Drops a Pair to Frostburg State

Wesleyan's softball team opened its doubleheader against Frostburg State with a competitive back-and-forth effort before the Bobcats were unable to slow the Bobcats of Frostburg in the later innings of Game 1, and the visitors carried that momentum into a high-scoring Game 2 to complete the sweep on Sunday in Fairmont. Frostburg claimed the opener, 8-4, before taking the second game, 13-3 in five innings.

In the first game, Wesleyan struck first in the bottom of the opening inning. Jaelyn Riley worked a leadoff walk, came around to third after an error, and scored on Josi Fix's RBI single to give the Bobcats an early 1-0 lead. Frostburg answered in the third when Arden Miller delivered a two-run double, but Wesleyan responded immediately in the bottom half. Reagan Winn doubled to begin the inning, and after Gracey Arnold reached on an error, Sydney Lowen came through with a two-run single to push Wesleyan back in front, 3-2.

Frostburg evened the score in the fourth on Ally Myers' RBI double, then seized control in the fifth. After Miller doubled and moved to third on a passed ball, Olivia Stetler and Brianna Russo followed with RBI doubles before Izabella Donaldson launched a two-run home run to cap a four-run frame and stretch the lead to 7-3. Wesleyan managed one run back in the bottom of the fifth when Madison Austra singled and later scored on Kali Vance's RBI groundout, but Frostburg added another insurance run in the sixth on Kylee Piconi's RBI triple.

Winn paced the Wesleyan offense in Game 1, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored, while Lowen drove in two runs and Fix added an RBI single. Austra also contributed a hit, and Riley reached base twice and scored once. Morgan Greene took the loss after working 4.2 innings, with Mackenzie O'Brien finishing the final 2.1 innings and striking out two. Frostburg collected 12 hits in the opener, led by Donaldson's 3-for-4, two-RBI day and Miller's two doubles with two runs driven in.

Game 2 began in promising fashion for Wesleyan. Riley walked to open the bottom of the first, Josi Fix drew a free pass, and Reagan Winn singled to load the bases. Gracey Arnold then ripped a two-run double, and Madison Austra followed with an RBI single to put Wesleyan on top 3-0 after one inning.

That early advantage disappeared in a decisive third inning from Frostburg. After being held scoreless through two innings, Frostburg erupted for 10 runs in the third. Sage Haller singled in a run, Ally Myers added a two-run single, Mackenzie Monahan drove in two more with a single, Arden Miller forced in another run with a bases-loaded walk, and Olivia Stetler delivered a two-run single as Frostburg surged ahead 10-3. The visitors added two more runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to seal the five-inning victory.

Arnold and Austra each drove in runs for Wesleyan in the nightcap, with Arnold's two-run double providing the biggest offensive swing. Winn and Ella Fournier also recorded hits, while Riley scored once and reached base with a walk. Frostburg finished with 11 walks and 12 RBIs on seven hits. Gracie Nelson scored twice and drove in one, Myers knocked in two, Monahan had two hits and two RBIs, and Stetler finished with two RBIs.

The Bobcats host their home opener against Davis & Elkins College on Wednesday, Mar. 25. The doubleheader begins at 2 p.m. on Culpepper Field.
