Point Park Defeats West Virginia Wesleyan, 21-4

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. —Wesleyan's women's lacrosse team battled through a difficult afternoon Wednesday, with the Bobcats finding some offense in the second half but falling to Point Park, 21-4, in a women's lacrosse matchup at home.

Point Park opened the game with the first three goals and controlled the opening quarter, taking a 3-0 lead on scores from Tessa Hueber and Kiley Leasure. Wesleyan's defense and goalkeeper Ella Gomez worked to keep the Bobcats within reach early, as Gomez came up with several first-quarter saves, including stops on Taylor Desko, Hueber and back-to-back attempts by Leasure. Francesca Sloan recorded Wesleyan's first shot of the afternoon late in the quarter, but the visitors carried their 3-0 advantage into the first break.

The visitors surged in the second quarter, stringing together nine goals to extend the margin to 12-0 by halftime. Andrea Kinger, Emma Diaz and Hueber helped lead that run, with Point Park scoring in quick bursts during the middle stages of the quarter.

Wesleyan broke through in the third quarter on a man-up opportunity. After Nyah Elmer won the draw control, Point Park was assessed a green card, and just three seconds later Ashlyn LaPlante capitalized, scoring with 12:48 left in the quarter to put the Bobcats on the scoreboard at 13-1. Later in the period, after Point Park answered with several more goals, Elmer added another highlight for Wesleyan by scoring unassisted with 25 seconds remaining in the quarter, trimming the deficit to 17-2 entering the fourth.
The Bobcats continued to show fight in the final quarter. After Point Park moved in front 20-2, Elmer struck again on an unassisted goal at the 7:48 mark. Wesleyan then turned another extra-player chance into a score when Francesca Sloan converted a free-position opportunity for a man-up goal with 4:24 remaining.

Elmer led Wesleyan with two goals and a team-high seven draw controls, while LaPlante and Sloan each added a goal. Sloan also contributed two draw controls, and Sydney McKinney was active defensively with four caused turnovers. Gomez was busy throughout the day in goal and finished with 13 saves against 42 Point Park shots, including 33 shots on goal. As a team, Wesleyan finished with eight shots, nine draw controls and six caused turnovers.

Point Park was paced by a balanced offensive attack. Kinger, Leasure and Hueber each scored four goals, with Kinger also adding four assists. Diaz finished with three goals and an assist, while Alayna Zell and Payton Zwirek each scored twice. Point Park finished with a 42-8 edge in shots and a 12-9 advantage in draw controls.
