LYNCHBURG, Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan College men's and women's track & field teams delivered a highly competitive and well-rounded performance at the Dr. Jack Toms Alumni Invitational, hosted by the University of Lynchburg, turning in multiple event victories, podium finishes, and a host of personal-best caliber efforts against a deep Division I and II field.
Women's Recap
The Bobcats were led by a dominant effort from
Mariam Al-Zoubi, who established herself as one of the premier distance runners in the meet with a decisive victory in the 5,000 meters. Al-Zoubi crossed the line in 17:51.79, holding off a tightly packed chase group and finishing ahead of several top competitors from Kutztown and Virginia Tech. Her performance not only secured the win but also set the tone for Wesleyan's distance squad.
In the 800 meters, Wesleyan placed multiple athletes in scoring contention, highlighted by
Dakota Johnson, who finished third overall in 2:17.96. Johnson remained in contact with the leaders throughout the race and closed effectively over the final lap. Teammate
Reyna Headley added a 10th-place finish (2:24.76), while
Jessica Williams competed in the same event, contributing to the team's depth.
The Bobcats' presence was equally strong in the steeplechase, where
Lindsey Dillon delivered a standout runner-up finish in 11:10.91. Dillon maintained a steady rhythm over the barriers and water jumps, separating herself from the field early and holding second place throughout. Wesleyan added two more top-eight finishers in the event, as
Addie Elliott (7th, 12:31.52) and
Kristina Lesho (8th, 12:43.65) underscored the team's depth in distance events.
Wesleyan also made its mark in the 4x400-meter relay, where the quartet of
Reyna Headley,
Taryn Veltri,
Darianne Christian, and
Dakota Johnson combined for a fourth-place finish in 4:05.97. The group ran a consistent race across all four legs, staying competitive with programs such as Shippensburg and Slippery Rock.
Additional distance highlights included
Taylor Hess, who placed 10th in the 10,000 meters (41:27.55), and multiple competitors in the 800 meters who gained valuable experience in a large, competitive field.
In the sprints,
Darianne Christian led the Bobcats with a 16th-place finish in the 200 meters (26.18), while
Destiney Barnette competed in both the 100-meter prelims (13.35) and 200 meters (27.06), showing versatility across sprint events.
The field events saw consistent contributions from Wesleyan athletes, led by
Mallory McGinnis, who placed seventh in both the shot put (11.95m) and discus (36.85m), scoring in both events against strong competition. In the pole vault,
Clover Stamat cleared 2.75 meters to finish eighth, while
Jessica Williams added a fifth-place finish in the high jump (1.53m). The throws group also saw efforts from
Jacqualin Leaman and
Mary Genes, who competed across multiple throwing disciplines.
Men's Recap
The men's team was highlighted by one of the most dominant performances of the meet, as
Anthony Sanders captured the 3,000-meter steeplechase title in 9:16.23. Sanders controlled the pace from the outset, executing cleanly over barriers and the water jump while steadily building separation from the field. His victory marked one of Wesleyan's top individual performances of the weekend.
Backing Sanders in the same event was
Jonathan Norton, who placed third in 9:32.20, giving Wesleyan two athletes on the podium.
Griffin Thomas also contributed with a 12th-place finish (9:56.50), rounding out a strong showing in the steeplechase.
The distance group continued its success in the 5,000 meters, where
Erik Nygaard (5th, 15:01.95) and
Kent Niland (8th, 15:12.03) both delivered top-eight finishes in a highly competitive field. Nygaard remained in contention with the lead pack deep into the race, while Niland showed strength in the latter stages to secure his finish.
In the 1,500 meters (invite section),
Jonathan Norton doubled back to place 14th in 4:04.45, demonstrating versatility across distance events.
The field events were headlined by
Royell Salmon, who captured first place in the championship section of the long jump with a mark of 7.07 meters. Salmon's winning jump came in a tightly contested competition, edging out top athletes from Shippensburg and Kutztown.
Additional field highlights included
Reese Farquharson, who placed sixth in the long jump (6.31m) and added a 14th-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (17.16), showcasing multi-event capability. In the throws,
Kian Rangel-Cabreros led the way with a ninth-place finish in the shot put (14.35m), while also contributing in the discus.
On the track,
Lucas Anderson paced the sprint group with an 11.51 performance in the 100-meter prelims, while
Carson Moore added a 23.46 finish in the 200 meters. In the middle distances,
Zane Nelson competed in the 800 meters (2:04.39), and
Landyn Sell recorded a 15th-place finish in the 10,000 meters (36:04.51).
The throws group added further depth with performances from
Quinton Payton, who placed fourth in the hammer throw (49.28m), and additional entries across discus and hammer.
A group of Bobcat athletes also headed to West Liberty University over the weekend to compete in the Tim Weaver Invitational.
Marimo Akita headlined the seven-event heptathlon for WVWC scoring 3193 points, while sophomore
Skylar Womack finished with a total of 1934 points. On the men's side,
Drew Pierce finished with 3524 points in the decathlon.
Overall Takeaway
West Virginia Wesleyan showcased a balanced, competitive roster with strengths across distance, field events, and relays. The Bobcats produced multiple event champions (
Al-Zoubi, Sanders, Salmon), several podium finishes, and strong depth across both squads.
With continued progression and a number of athletes demonstrating the ability to compete at a high level against regional and Division I competition, Wesleyan appears well-positioned as the outdoor season continues on April 3
rd at the University of Charleston for the UC Golden Eagle Invitational.
