ATHENS, W.Va. — The Bobcats earned a split in Sunday's Mountain East Conference softball doubleheader at Concord, using a six-run fourth inning to claim the opener 8-4 before the Mountain Lions answered with an 11-2 win in five innings in game two.
In the opener, the Bobcats shook off an early 2-0 deficit and erupted in the fourth to seize control. Concord plated two runs in the bottom of the third on RBI doubles from Madison Hollis and Hannah Niten, but Wesleyan answered immediately with its biggest inning of the day.
Josi Fix started the rally with an RBI double that scored
Reagan Winn, and the Bobcats kept the pressure on with help from a Concord error, an RBI double by
Ella Fournier, an RBI single from
Trinity Nowicki, an RBI single by
Jaelyn Riley, and an RBI single by
Gracey Arnold to turn a two-run deficit into a 6-2 lead.
Wesleyan added insurance in the seventh. Winn led off with a double,
Kali Vance delivered a pinch-hit RBI single, and another Concord error allowed the Bobcats to score their eighth run of the game. That proved more than enough support for
Morgan Greene, who went the distance in the circle. Greene scattered eight hits, struck out five, and worked around four walks to earn the complete-game victory.
The Bobcats finished with 12 hits in game one, led by Nowicki's 3-for-4 performance with an RBI and a run scored. Winn went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Fix finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs, and Riley, Arnold, Fournier, and Vance each drove in a run. Wesleyan took advantage of three Concord errors, with only four of its eight runs charged as earned.
Concord got a strong offensive effort from Niten in the opener, as she went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, two RBI, and a walk. Hollis doubled and drove in a run, while Kayla Sholter and Blake Jamerson also doubled. Still, the Bobcats were able to keep Concord from putting together a late rally, retiring the Mountain Lions scoreless in the seventh to secure the win.
In game two, Wesleyan struck first and briefly matched Concord early. Riley opened the top of the first with a single and later scored on
Reagan Winn's RBI single. After Concord answered in the bottom half, the Bobcats tied the game again in the third when
Trinity Nowicki doubled and came home on a bunt single from
Lynzee Hague.
The turning point came in the bottom of the third. Concord capitalized on a Wesleyan error to break the 2-2 tie, then added two more runs in the inning, including an RBI double from Reghan Hintz. The Mountain Lions put the game away in the fourth with a six-run outburst, highlighted by Hannah Niten's RBI single, a two-run double from Blake Jamerson, an RBI single by Grace Dodson, and two unearned runs that scored after defensive miscues.
Wesleyan collected seven hits in the nightcap, with Riley going 2-for-2 and scoring a run. Winn finished 2-for-2 with an RBI, Hague added an RBI bunt single, and Nowicki doubled and scored. But the Bobcats were undone by three errors, which contributed to four unearned runs for Concord.
Concord piled up 13 hits in game two and got production throughout the lineup. Kendall Morgan had two hits and an RBI, Niten went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Kristy McCord had two hits and scored twice, Jamerson drove in two and scored twice, and Hintz helped herself with two hits, including an RBI double, while also earning the win in the circle.
Josi Fix took the loss for Wesleyan, and
Mackenzie O'Brien worked in relief.
Wesleyan heads to Point Park University (Pa.) on Friday, April 3 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
