ELKINS, W.Va. — Wesleyan's softball team put together an all-around strong afternoon on Tuesday, sweeping Davis & Elkins in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader by scores of 9-1 and 12-1. The Bobcats combined for 21 runs on 25 hits across the two games, while getting complete-game efforts in the circle from
Morgan Greene and
Mackenzie O'Brien.
Wesleyan wasted little time getting on the board in game one.
Josi Fix doubled in the first inning and
Madison Austra followed with an RBI double to right field to give the Bobcats a 1-0 advantage. Davis & Elkins tied the game in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of an outfield error after Gweny Wessling's single, but Wesleyan answered emphatically in the fourth. Arnold opened the inning with a solo home run to right center, and after
Ella Fournier reached and
Grace Richardson entered to run, DeSpirito launched a two-run homer to right to stretch the lead to 4-1. Later in the inning,
Lynzee Hague doubled home another run and
Reagan Winn added an RBI single to make it 6-1.
The Bobcats added the final margin in the fifth. Fournier singled,
Kali Vance reached on an error, and pinch hitter
Emma Putman singled to load the bases. Hague was hit by a pitch to force in a run, Fix drew an RBI walk, and Austra capped the scoring with an RBI single to left. Greene closed the door in the bottom half, retiring the side in order to finish off the run-rule victory.
Austra led the way in game one by going 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Fix finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. DeSpirito went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs, Arnold homered and drove in one, and Hague added two RBIs. Greene had a dominant outing, allowing one run on two hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.
In game two, Wesleyan's offense was even more explosive. After Davis & Elkins matched Wesleyan's second-inning run in the bottom half to tie the game at 1-1, the Bobcats steadily took control. Hague tripled to open the third and scored on Fix's RBI double. Arnold then led off the fourth with a solo home run to make it 3-1. Wesleyan created separation in the fifth when DeSpirito singled to load the bases and Putman ripped a three-run double to right field, scoring DeSpirito, O'Brien, and Austra for a 6-1 lead.
The sixth inning removed any doubt. Arnold opened the frame with her second homer of the game, Hague singled and stole second, and Austra crushed a three-run homer to right center to make it 10-1. Later in the inning, Putman delivered again with an RBI single, and Arnold capped the outburst with an RBI double to left center as the Bobcats scored six times in the inning. O'Brien worked around a two-out double in the bottom of the sixth to close out the sweep.
Putman had a huge game two, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs and two doubles. Arnold finished 3-for-5 with two home runs, a double, and three RBIs, while Austra drove in three with her home run. Hague scored twice and added a triple, and DeSpirito chipped in two hits. In the circle, O'Brien earned the win after allowing just one earned run and striking out three.
For Davis & Elkins, Alyssa Haynes drove in the lone run of game two, while Audrey Higgins scored the Senators' only run in the opener. Ashlyn Zapach and Madison Smith each had two hits in the nightcap, and Lorena Ruiz-Rubio had the lone extra-base hit for Davis & Elkins in game one with a double. Sammie Jarvis was charged with the loss in both contests.
With the sweep, West Virginia Wesleyan moved to 16-26 overall after taking both ends of the twinbill in Elkins. Davis & Elkins fell to 14-32.
