Glenville State Takes Sunday Doubleheader from Bobcats

GLENVILLE, W.Va. — The Bobcats dropped both ends of a Saturday doubleheader at Glenville State University, falling 6-0 in the opener before dropping a 6-1 decision in game two at the Sue Morris Sports Complex.

The opener stayed scoreless through two innings before Glenville State broke the game open with a five-run third inning. The Pioneers collected six hits in the frame, using RBI singles from Ashton Crace, Greyson McNeill and Jetsel Cajigas-Marti, along with an RBI fielder's choice from Luke Sweigar, to build a 5-0 advantage.

Wesleyan had an early scoring opportunity in the second inning when Carter Collins singled to right field and Coleman Cross moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Glenville starter Trent Taylor worked out of the inning, however, and went on to control the game from the mound.

Matthew Neach gave the Bobcats another chance in the fourth with a single to right field, then stole second base, but the inning ended before Wesleyan could push a run across. Hank Humbert added a fifth-inning single, and Drew Jrolf singled in the seventh, but the Bobcats were unable to string together enough offense against Taylor.

Taylor earned the complete-game win for Glenville State, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out 11 over seven shutout innings. Drew Evans took the loss for Wesleyan after allowing five runs over 2.2 innings. Alex Hernandez was effective in relief, working 3.1 innings and giving up just one run on one hit with one strikeout.

Glenville State added its final run in the fifth when Colby Guy homered to right field. Crace finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Pioneers, while Guy scored twice and drove in a run.

For Wesleyan, Collins, Matthew Neach, Humbert and Jrolf each recorded one hit.

Wesleyan's offense found a late run in the second game, but Glenville State again used a decisive middle inning to secure the win.
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the third on Adam Bright's solo home run to left center. The score remained there until the fifth, when Glenville State scored five times on six hits to stretch the lead to 6-0.

After Bright walked and Crace doubled to right center, Zach Laurie drove in a run with a groundout. Colby Guy followed with an RBI single, and Carlos De Jesus later delivered a two-run single to right field. Luke Sweigar capped the inning with an RBI single to left.

Wesleyan threatened in the fifth when Chase Gora drew a two-out walk and Dylan Neach doubled down the right-field line, putting two runners in scoring position. Glenville starter Jacob Gorra escaped the inning with a strikeout to keep the Bobcats off the board.

The Bobcats broke through in the seventh. Carter Collins opened the inning with a single to left field, moved to second on a groundout by Coleman Cross, and scored when Dylan Neach doubled to left center. Neach finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and Wesleyan's lone RBI, while Collins scored the run. Gora reached base twice with two walks.

Drake Long took the loss for Wesleyan, allowing four runs over 4.2 innings while striking out three. Bryson Peffer and Alex Hernandez finished the game in relief, with Hernandez working 1.1 innings and allowing one hit while striking out one.

Gorra earned the win for Glenville State, throwing 5.2 scoreless innings with six strikeouts. William Chu finished the final 1.1 innings for the Pioneers.

Bright, Crace, Guy, De Jesus and Sweigar each drove in runs for Glenville State, which finished with nine hits in the nightcap. Wesleyan totaled three hits, with Dylan Neach accounting for two of them.

The Bobcats head into the season's final doubleheader this weekend when they take on Davis & Elkins College. First pitch is at Hank Ellis Field on Friday, May 1 at 5 p.m.
