David Gonzales, also known as "Coach Speedy", joined the West Virginia Wesleyan football coaching staff in 2022 as the tight ends & running backs coach as well as serving as the team's video coordinator.
Prior to Wesleyan, Gonzales was the offensive line coach and the run-game coordinator at North Dakota State College of Science during the 2021 season. While at NDSCS Gonzales coached a first-team all-american offensive lineman and helped five offensive lineman sign to play at four-year schools.
In 2020, Gonzales served as the wide receivers and defensive backs coach at Francis Scott Key High School in Union Bridge, Md. Francis Scott Key led the county in receiving yards and three wide receivers were named to the all-county team during Gonzales' tenure.
Gonzales began his coaching career at Lackawanna College in 2018 as an assistant offensive line coach. He was elevated to running backs coach later that season. In his first season at Lackawanna, Gonzales coached a backfield that ranked eighth in rushing nationally. He developed six running backs that signed to four-year schools, including three signing with Division I FBS/FCS programs. After the 2018 season, Gonzales was promoted to the wide receivers coaching position. His team competed for an NJCAA National Championship and he coached an NJCAA All-American. That year, he mentored four wide receivers who accepted scholarship offers to play at Division I football programs.
A Galveston, Texas native, Gonzales played as an offensive lineman for Lackawanna College (2014-2015) before accepting a scholarship to finish his career at Minot State University (2015-2017).Â
