Coach Jeff Hoffman enters his fourth season on the West Virginia Wesleyan College men’s basketball staff, bringing an extensive background in coaching, teaching, recruiting, and player development to the Bobcat program. With more than four decades of coaching experience at the high school, junior college, and NCAA Division II levels, Hoffman has built a career centered on player development, winning, and helping student-athletes reach their full potential.
Hoffman joined the Bobcats following six seasons at Garrett College in Maryland, where he served from 2017 through 2023. During his tenure, he helped lead the Lakers to a 76-35 overall record and played an integral role in one of the most successful seasons in program history.
In 2020, Garrett College advanced to the NJCAA National Final Four for the first time in program history. The Lakers fell in the national semifinal on a last-second shot, finishing the season ranked No. 4 nationally. Hoffman also played a key role in developing several outstanding players during his time at Garrett, including All-Region selections Zakeem Davis (2018) and D’Monte Brown (2020), second-team All-American Cameron Selders (2020), and first-team All-American Malik Whitaker (2020). Davis, Brown, and Whitaker have all continued their basketball careers professionally, with Davis playing in Canada and Brown and Whitaker playing professionally in Germany.
Prior to joining Garrett College, Hoffman spent 37 years teaching and coaching high school basketball in West Virginia. He spent 13 years at East Fairmont High School before joining Morgantown High School, where he spent 21 years as a teacher and coach. During his time with the Morgantown Mohigans, Hoffman was part of one of the most successful eras in program history, helping the team reach the highest levels of West Virginia high school basketball and ultimately capture a state championship.
As a junior varsity coach, Hoffman compiled an extraordinary 428-70 record, reflecting his longstanding commitment to teaching the game and developing young players.
Hoffman earned his undergraduate degree from Fairmont State College (now Fairmont State University) and his master’s degree from West Virginia University.
Since arriving at West Virginia Wesleyan, Hoffman has been an important part of the Bobcats’ continued resurgence and their pursuit of sustained success in the Mountain East Conference. His experience and expertise in player development have contributed directly to the success of Wesleyan student-athletes.
During the 2023-24 season, Hoffman helped guide Deiker Padrino through one of the most productive individual seasons in recent West Virginia Wesleyan basketball history. Padrino earned All-Mountain East Conference honors while ranking among the nation’s top 10 players in three-point shooting and leading the conference in that category. Following his Wesleyan career, Padrino continued playing basketball professionally in South America.
Hoffman has also played an important role in the development of Alex Mirhosseini, a member of the 2024-25 Bobcat squad. Following his graduation from West Virginia Wesleyan, Mirhosseini continued his collegiate career at the NCAA Division I level at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
Throughout his career, Hoffman has demonstrated a consistent ability to develop players, build winning programs, and prepare student-athletes for opportunities beyond the basketball court. His coaching experience spans more than 40 years and includes state championship basketball, national-level junior college success, NCAA Division II competition, All-American players, conference award winners, and athletes who have continued their careers professionally.
Hoffman’s extensive experience, passion for player development, and commitment to West Virginia Wesleyan continue to make him a valuable member of the Bobcat basketball program.
