Goalkeeper Duo Propel Wesleyan to MEC Championship Title

Buckhannon, WV- West Virginia Wesleyan Women's soccer took the pitch on Sunday afternoon in the Mountain East Conference Final. The Lady Cats being the number one seed in the tournament hosted the Concord University Mountain Lions. Wesleyan would need two overtime periods, and a penalty kick shootout to capture the 2018 Mountain East Conference title. The goalkeeping efforts of Chelsea Hubner and Ashlee Schumacher led the Lady Cats throughout the game. Hubner would keep the game scoreless in the first half, and Schumacher would play the second half and the two overtime periods. Hubner would return for the shootout. 

The first thirty minutes of the game was back and forth action between the Lady Cats and the visiting Mountain Lions. In that span Wesleyan managed to get off six shots to Concord's three. 

The Lady Cats would have a scare with one minute to go in the half when Concord's Alyssa Mahar would play a ball in the box. Wesleyan's Chelsea Hubner charged forward and made a great save to keep Concord off the board. Wesleyan's defense cleaned up the save and the game went into the half tied 0-0. 

Wesleyan's first big opportunity in the second half came in the 61st minute when Natalie Prater played a cross into the box that was a volleyed by Shannon Shawgo. Concord keeper Katie Mahar made a great save on the play to keep the game scoreless. 

In the 77th minute, Ashlee Schumacher made two back to back saves that kept Concord off the board. Leah Foster made a move past a defender and fired a shot that Schumacher punched away. Courtney Wallace got the rebound off the save and tried to place a shot to the right of the goal but was snatched away by Schumacher.

The game would end 0-0 and head to the first overtime period. Wesleyan out shot the Mountain Lions 18-10 in regular time. 

The first overtime would be eventful but neither team could find the back of the net. Wesleyan would have four shots in the period, two of them coming from Natalie Prater, and Concord would have one shot in the period. 

Ashlee Schumacher would have another amazing save for the Lady Cats. In the first minute of overtime, Mira Kontio of Concord had a point blank shot from six yards out that Schumacher was able to make a diving save on. 

The second overtime would end with Concord having the advantage in shots in the period with two to Wesleyan's one. With the game still being tied, we would head to penalty kicks. 

Wesleyan would edge out Concord 3-2 in penalty kicks to win the 2018 Mountain East Conference Championship. Natalie Pireu had the winning kick for the Lady Cats. Chelsea Hubner would return to the game for the Wesleyan during the shootout and provide a great save on Concord's third kick.

Natalie Prater, MaKatlyn Tucker, Chelsea Hubner, Shannon Shawgo, and Isabella Salas would be named to the All-MEC Tournament team. This would push Wesleyan's unbeaten streak to seventeen games before they enter regional play.
