Baseball Sweeps Fairmont St. in Doubleheader

Chris Metrick breaks Wesleyan career saves record.

BUCKHANNON -- Wesleyan held on to sweep Fairmont St. in doubleheader action Monday afternoon at Hank Ellis Field. Both games went down to the wire, with WVWC holding off the falcons in each contest by one run.

Logan Brouwer (W,1-1) picked up the win in game one. Brouwer pitched five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits.

In game two, Riley Metz pitched four innings, striking out five batters and allowing only one run on five hits. Julio Medina (W,1-2) pitched two innings, allowing only one hit. Chris Metrick closed out each game, making him the all-time leading saves leader in Wesleyan history with 23. Metrick broke Craig Hriblan's (2005-2008) record of 21 for his career.

Game one started off with Fairmont St. scoring one run in the top of the first as a Austin Norman double brought home Joseph LaRocca.

Wesleyan would respond as Eric Forbrick singled in the bottom of the first to score Tanner McCallister.

In the top of the second, Greg Yaksich would bring in Tyler Skidmore to put the Falcons up 2-1.

The Bobcats would score two runs in the bottom of the third. Antonio Vega singled to right field, scoring Greg Smith. In the next at bat, Forbrick would ground out into a double play, but Smith would score, putting Wesleyan up 3-2.

Both teams would add a run in the fourth. Fairmont State's Ben Myers would fly out to center, scoring Darrin Zombro. Wesleyan's Dylan Frye singled to center scored Kolby Wolf.

The game winning run was scored in the bottom of the fifth inning as Nick Grotti was walked with the bases loaded.

Fairmont would add one run in the top of the sixth with a Skidmore single, but came up just short as Wesleyan would take the game with a final score of 5-4.

In game two, offenses were held in check as WVWC would only register five hits, while Fairmont State added only six.

A passed ball would score Wesleyan's Smith in the bottom of the first.

Fairmont St. would tie the game in the top of the fourth as Yaksich tripled to bring home Tyler Hill.

The deciding run was scored by Alex Skinner on a Josh Jano single. The Bobcats would hold on for a 2-1 victory.

With the victories, WVWC moves to 3-1 in MEC play and 4-12 overall.

The Bobcats will take on Salem International this Thursday at home. The game is slated for a 6 p.m start.
