Buckhannon, WV -- West Virginia Wesleyan eased by a short-handed West Chester squad by a score of 9-0 here Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale.
Playing in the final home matches of their careers, Wesleyan seniors Ramon Rodriguez, Ferran Berga, and Yonas Gebre each contributed doubles wins while Rodriguez also added a singles point to the Bobcat's cause. Matcon Dias, Thomas McIntosh, Lukas Laipold and Harry Simaioforidis also garnered wins against the Rams, who were competing without two regulars due to injury.
The win moves the 'Cats record to 15-3 on the year heading into the Mountain East conference tournament next weekend. Wesleyan had already finished the MEC season with a 7-0 mark and claimed the regular season title by virtue of their win Fridat at West Liberty.
"It was a nice way for Ramon, Ferran, and Yonas to finish their tennis careers," said head coach Marc Walters of the sunny weather and warm temperatures. "These guys have all distinguished themselves with conference, academic, and national honors while maintaining a high level of class and sportsmanship" said Walters.
Walters got emotional at the introductions for the seniors before the match, noting that they were the foundation for the current successes seen by the team this season.
"I am truly going to miss their impact and leadership when this year ends," said Walters
Under the leadership of Berga and Rodriguez over the past four years, the Bobcats have fashioned four Mountain East conference championships, winning regular season titles in 2017 and 2018, and tournament titles in 2014 and 2017. They will shoot for a fifth crown in Huntington this weekend.
Rodriguez has been a 3-time All-MEC first team selection, as well as earning a top 10 ITA regional singles ranking each of the past three years. Twice named to the Wesleyan honor roll, he was also an ITA All-Academic member in 2017. He currently stands at 108 career wins, with 65 singles and 43 doubles victories.
Berga was All-MEC in 2016, when he went 21-4 at #4 singles and 11-10 at #1 doubles. He has 72 career wins, with 39 of those coming on the doubles court. A three-time Athletic Director's honor roll member, he was also an ITA All-Academic team selection in 2016. He was twice ranked in the regional top 10 as a doubles player.
Gebre, an MBA graduate student transfer from Lewis and Clark State College in Idaho, concludes his only season with the Bobcats with a 14-3 singles mark and a 12-6 record in doubles, mostly at the top spot in the doubles lineup. The 2017 National ITA Athur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award winner, Gebre was also an NAIA All-American doubles player while at LCSC.
