Surprise, AZ -- West Virginia Wesleyan men's tennis team held onto the #38 spot in the latest Oracle ITA national rankings poll released today.
The Bobcats (15-3, 7-0 MEC) are one of two teams from the Atlantic Region in the top 50. Bluefield State, at #17 for the second consecutive week, is the other regional team represented.
"It's been a nice run for the guys this spring," said head coach
Marc Walters, who won his 600th career match this past week in the 'Cats 7-2 victory over Fairmont State.
"We made a true effort early on to go play at some good southern teams, outdoors in February and early March, which gave us the strength of schedule and opportunities to get into the national mix," explained Walters. "Those were very tough matches, considering we had not been outside one day to practice and the difficulty of driving all over the place in those little white vans."
Wesleyan broke into the rankings on March 21st, and have been in each of the past five weekly rankings. They reached a high of #36 on March 28th.
"Our guys earned the chance to get in these rankings, and I am proud of their season,"said Walters. "We still have a lot of business to take care of with the MEC tournament and, hopefully, and NCAA bid."
Wesleyan is the top seed for the MEC Tournament this coming weekend in Huntington, WV. Outdoor matches will be held at the Brian Fox Tennis Center on the campus of Marshall University.
The Bobcats received a first round bye, and will play the winner of #4 West Liberty and Concord University at 11 am on Saturday.
