Box Score 4 Buckhannon -- The Bobcats welcomed conference foes Urbana and Notre Dame to Hank Ellis Field this past weekend. The Blue Knights would bounce back to split the series with WVWC after a 9-0 defeat in game one. On Saturday, Wesleyan dropped both games to Notre Dame by scores of 2-1 and 17-0.
In game one Friday night, Starting Pitcher
Jake Bishop had an excellent performance, pitching a complete game shutout with five strikeouts and only surrendering three hits. The performance earned him MEC Pitcher of the Week honors.Â
The offense started in the bottom of the second inning as a
Greg Smith sacrifice fly brought home
Alex Skinner. In the next at bat,
Dominic Castello singled to bring in teammates
Tanner McCallister and
Bryson Fluke.
Wesleyan added to their 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third as
Kyle Kania picked up two RBI's as his single to center field scored
Nick Grotti and
Josh Jano.
More insurance was added in the bottom of the fifth when Smith was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Kania. In the next at bat, Castello was also hit by a pitch that brought home Fluke.
After a pitching change, Jano brought in the final runs of the game as his single to left field brought home Smith and Mccallister. Closing the door on thw Bobcats 9-0 victory.
In game two of doubleheader action, pitching and defense dominated as WVWCÂ only had four hits and Urbana only managed two hits in the contest.
After a scoreless first two innings, Urbana got on the board as Brad Burkholder singled to center field to bring home teammate Tanner Davis. The offense continued as Austin Pratt doubled to left field, scoring Mickey Barea and Burkholder.
WVWC would be held scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when a Jano homerun put two on the board for the 'Cats.
Wesleyan had some life in the bottom of the seventh as the bases were loaded with only one out but were unable to bring anyone in, as Urbana would squeeze out the 3-2 win.
The Bobcats hosted Notre Dame for more doubleheader action on Saturday, as game one turned out to be a defensive battle, ending in a 2-1 victory for Notre Dame.
Wesleyan would get on the board first in the bottom of the second, as
Kolby Wolf doubled to center bringing home Grotti.
Notre Dame would answer in the top of the third as Adam Purdy homered.
Notre Dame would take the lead and not look back in the top of the fourth when Leo Wells singled to third base driving home Robert Williams.Â
The Bobcats couldn't answer and Notre Dame would take game one 2-1.
Game two was all Notre Dame as the 17-0 victory was fueled by an 11-run fourth inning. The Falcons would register 16 hits while the bobcats managed five.Â
Kenny Pierson picked the win (2-0), pitching six innings, striking out three batters, and allowing only five hits.
Wesleyan sits at 6-18 overall, and 5-7 in MEC play.
The Bobcats will play next on April 3rd at Ohio Valley. The game is scheduled for a 3 P.M.
