Urbana, OH -- The Lady Bobcats took control against Urbana right from the start on Thursday night. West Virginia Wesleyan took the lead in the 3rd minute of the match when Junior F
Taylor Maucere buried her 2nd goal of the season. The defense never let the Blue Knights get in rhythm moving the ball, as they only allowed 5 shots on the night. Senior GK
Chelsea Hubner showed why she is so highly regarded in the net, keeping her 5th clean sheet of the 2019 season.
The importance of this win for Wesleyan cannot be understated. Their loss on Sunday dropped them into a 3 way tie in wins in the South Division with Davis & Elkins and Charleston, and with Thursday's result, currently jump back into 2nd place at 5-3 in Mountain East Conference play. This game had big implications towards the direction of the rest of the season, and the Lady Bobcats proved they are still a powerful team to go up against in the MEC.
With the loss, Urbana drops to 5-3-1 in MEC play, and 5-5-1 overall. This result is difficult for Urbana, as they now sit in 2nd place in the North Division, and they surely had hopes to hold at least a share of 1st place with a win against Wesleyan.
Taylor Maucere's biggest goal of the season so far came in that 3rd minute, and Wesleyan never ceased control of the game afterward. The Lady Bobcats dominated a game against a top team in the MEC, outpacing Urbana in shots 23-5, and shots on goal 10-3. The 23 total shots and 10 shots on goal are both the 3rd most in a game for the team this season. The Lady Bobcats also saw three put multiple shots on goal, with Seniors
Haelly Ramirez and
Madison LaPole, and Junior
Chrystal Posada, all forcing pressure on the defense tonight.
Chelsea Hubner looks well on her way to another MEC All-Conference selection if she can keep producing a strong season, in which she has only allowed 7 goals in 11 games so far.
For the Blue Knights, Senior F Alyssa Garberich was the only one who could get anything going on offense. She put 3 out of her 4 shots on the net tonight. Taking a tough loss in this one is Junior GK Hanzel Sanz. The reigning MEC Defensive Player of the Week made 9 saves today, and she faced a full 90 minute attack from Wesleyan.
The Bobcats follow up this win with their biggest test of the season so far, traveling to face 1st place Concord on Sunday at 1pm. The Mountain Lions sit at 10-1 overall, with their only loss coming to the Lady Bobcats in Buckhannon three weeks ago.
Urbana will look to look to regain the form they had coming into Thursday, on the road in Charleston next Wednesday. They had a five-match unbeaten streak before they played Wesleyan, and they will use the long week to shake this one off and hopefully create another.
