Box Score Beckley, WV -- West Virginia Wesleyan Women's Soccer traveled to first place Concord on Sunday, and lost 2-0. Concord scored twice early in the second period and carried the lead to the final whistle. For the Lady Bobcats, this one came down to missed opportunities. They shot ten times over the course of the 90 minutes, and could not get one on target until the 89th minute.
The defeat moves Wesleyan to 6-6 on the season, and 5-4 in the Mountain East Conference. Concord's win is their sixth in a row. The Mountain Lions have not lost since their defeat in Buckhannon on September 25th.
Senior Forwards
Madison LaPole and
Shannon Shawgo both created a handful of chances for the Lady Bobcats on Sunday, registering three shots apiece. LaPole put the only shot on net for the game. Senior GK
Chelsea Hubner made five saves on seven total chances, and if not for her three saves late in the second period, the deficit could have grown.
The two goals for Concord were both scored by Midfielders, Juniors Mira Kontio from Finland and Yasmin Mosby from England. It was an international show on offense for the Mountain Lions on Sunday, as Freshman Michelle Brogden and Sophomore Leah Foster who are both from England as well, assisted on Kontio's goal. Junior GK Katie Maher was not forced to make a save for 89 minutes.
After a week of travel, it will be relieving for Wesleyan to return home to Buckhannon for the upcoming week. They will host Glenville State at 4 pm on Wednesday, and Charleston at 7 pm on Sunday. The Lady Bobcats must take advantage of playing the two teams below them in the standings this week, starting with 0-8 Glenville State on Wednesday. In order to grab one of the top seeds in the MEC Tournament in a few weeks, two wins are a must. Both games will be played on campus at Culpepper Stadium.
The great season keeps on rolling for Concord, and they get to play host two more times this upcoming week. Davis & Elkins come to town on Wednesday, and the Mountain Lions can not take lightly a Senators team that just put up four goals on Sunday. The Lady Bobcats will be interested in this one, as Davis & Elkins is one spot ahead of them in the MEC South.
