Soccers Head to Concord for Important Doubleheader

Buckhannon, WV -- West Virginia Wesleyan Men's and Women's Soccer will travel to Beckley, WV on Sunday afternoon to take on the Concord Mountain Lions. The games were moved to Beckley from Athens early Sunday morning. At this point of the season, reaching past the half-way point, it may be fair to say that this is the most important day in Wesleyan soccer this year.

The Lady Bobcats play first at 1 pm, and they match up against a first place Concord squad that is riding high at 10-1 overall this season. The only team to defeat the Mountain Lions this season, the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats. That match was played on September 25th in Buckhannon, and it will be a more difficult task for Wesleyan today without the confines of Culpepper Stadium. The girls just took out a confident Urbana team in Ohio on Thursday, and with a win today at Concord, can prove to the Mountain East Conference that they are not a team to look forward to facing down the final stretch of the season and into the postseason. The Lady Bobcats boast one of the best goalkeepers in the region in Senior Chelsea Hubner, and have been seeing many new faces contribute to the offense as of late. If they can control the pace of the game early on, and get on the board first similar to Thursday, then they will have a strong chance to make a statement win on Sunday.

The Men will cap the doubleheader at 3:30 pm, and they will look to take advantage of a struggling Concord team that sits at 1-6-2 in MEC play this season. The Bobcats went into Thursday's game at Urbana with a fresh regional ranking, but did not look sharp and took the defeat 1-0. They will travel to Beckley today with a 6-2-1 record in conference, which is good for 4th place in points. With 2nd place Notre Dame's, and 3rd place Urbana's, next games coming against 1st place 10-0 Charleston, this is the Bobcats opportunity to strike in the standings. With a win on Sunday, and Charleston wins against both Ohio schools, Wesleyan will grab a share of 2nd place in the MEC. The Bobcats have a balanced attack on offense, and rely on the strength of their defense and ball control to put away games in which they grab the lead. If they can get ahead of the Mountain Lions early, and can stave off nerves of an upset, they can put themselves in the driver's seat for a great position come MEC Tournament time come November.
