Buckhannon, WV – West Virginia Wesleyan Women's Soccer handled Glenville State 3-0 on Wednesday. Senior Madison LaPole kicked off the scoring in the third minute, and she was followed by Taylor Maucere in the 13th minute and Haelly Ramirez in the 66th minute. The Lady Bobcats controlled the game throughout its entirety, collecting seventeen shots to Glenville State's one.
This was a big win to get back on track for Wesleyan, after they suffered a setback at Concord on Sunday. The result pushes them to 7-6 overall in 2019, with a 6-4 record in the Mountain East Conference. The Lady Bobcats jump back into second place in the South Division.
The loss continues a difficult season for the Pioneers. They still have not collected a win in the Mountain East Conference in 2019. Leighana Weaver registered the only shot on net, and she was a constant counter-attack threat throughout the contest.
The Lady Bobcats offense got started early in this one, with a shot clanking off the post 28 seconds into the game off the foot of Haelly Ramirez. Ramirez finally got the goal she deserved in the second period, which was her seventh of the season. In the sixth minute, Madison LaPole took a pass from Shannon Shawgo and got her shot past the hands of the Glenville State keeper. Maucere and Ramirez's goals were scored unassisted, and both were impressive shots that left the defense helpless.
Over the past three games, the Lady Bobcats have put up a collection of 50 shots. If they can increase their levels of efficiency in turning those shots into goals, they have four over the three games, then they will be a serious threat to MEC opponents come postseason time.
Next up for them is an important Sunday night matchup with Charleston in Buckhannon. Charleston will enter five points down from Wesleyan in the standings, and a win for them would keep them in challenging distance for a top postseason seed. The Lady Bobcats could extend the gap to eight points with a win, and keep the race for a top two spot in the division between themselves, Davis & Elkins, and Concord. Weather looks to be a possible hindrance on Sunday, updates on game time and location will be provided.
Glenville State will host Wheeling on Sunday, who is also 0-9. One team will walk away from that contest with their first MEC points.
