Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Maucere Caps off Senior Night in Overtime

Special Day for the Lady Bobcats ends with heroics

Buckhannon, WV -- West Virginia Wesleyan Women's soccer did something special on Sunday night, they started and ended the night in celebration. Before the game, the Lady Bobcats honored their fourteen seniors with a ceremony involving family members and loved ones. The match then began, and the home crowd did not get another chance to cheer until the 90 minutes were over. Knotted up 0-0, Charleston and Wesleyan went to the first overtime period on tired legs, and a worn pitch. It did not take long for the action to pick up, and Junior F Taylor Maucere found herself in front of goal off a pass from Senior Madison LaPole. Maucere buried the shot, and capped off a great night for the Lady Bobcats and their faithful.

A tremendously important win for Wesleyan, they cleared out a contender for the top spot in the Mountain East Conference's South Division. The full three points move the Lady Bobcats to 7-4 in conference play, good for second place, and bump up to 8-6 on the season. Now six points behind leader Concord, it is still a long shot, but the Lady Bobcats are not out of the running for first place yet with three matches to play.

An equally tough loss for Charleston, they came in only two points down from Wesleyan, a win would have brought them ahead. Instead, the gap is now five points, and a finish above the Lady Bobcats for second seems unlikely. The Golden Eagles fall to 5-5-1 in the MEC, and 7-7-1 overall.

The game on Sunday night was even throughout, and the score of 0-0 at the end of regulation was indicative of the strong defense that both sides played. Wesleyan had a handful of chances throughout the match, but could not take advantage until overtime. Three minutes into the first golden goal period, Madison LaPole charged down the left side of the box and played a ball into the middle. Her pass landed at the feet of Taylor Maucere, who turned to find herself faced one-on-one with the goalkeeper. She kept calm, and buried her shot high into the net to end the game and send the Lady Bobcats home with all three points. LaPole and Sophomore Makatlyn Tucker were the only others to get shots on the net in this one. However, the Lady Bobcats pushed their way into eight corner kicks in this one, so the offense was effective all night getting into scoring areas. Senior GK Chelsea Hubner again came up big for Wesleyan, making seven saves, and having one of her best games of the season at home on Senior Day was a special moment.

Not much happened offensively for Charleston, they did not get a scoring chance that felt dangerous over the course of the game. They put seven shots on the net, two each by Forwards Shannon Henson and Keira Hill, but Chelsea Hubner had them under control in the net.

Wesleyan will hit the road for a non-league match with Lincoln University in Philadelphia on Wednesday. When they return to MEC competition, they will go up against two of the conference's weakest opponents in West Liberty and Wheeling. Two wins for the Lady Bobcats, and a slip up from Concord, and there could be late-season drama for the regular season MEC crown.

Next up for Charleston is a home game against Davis & Elkins on Wednesday. D & E now sits in between Charleston and Wesleyan in the South Division standings.
