Philippi, WV -- West Virginia Wesleyan Volleyball came into Tuesday's match against Alderson Broaddus looking to get back on the winning track following a tough weekend trip to Ohio. Unfortunately for the Lady Bobcats, the Battlers looked hungry for a win took the match in four sets on their home floor. Alderson Broaddus came out of the gate swinging, easily taking the first set 25-13, but they were almost matched in dominance by Wesleyan who fought back to win the second set 25-14. The Battlers got themselves back together, and cleaned up the final two sets with scores of 25-20, and 25-18.
This marks five losses in a row for Wesleyan, who now sits at 5-16 on the season. With Alderson Broaddus a member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, Tuesday's match does not effect Wesleyan's Mountain East Conference record.
The Battlers will end Tuesday with a 10-17 overall record, but they have not won a match in GMAC play, sitting at 0-7.
Freshman
Joelle Lalla was the star for the Lady Bobcats in this one, as she tied her career high in kills with eight. She was also very efficient in her swings, hitting at a .438 percentage. Freshman have been the story of the season so far for Wesleyan, as
Payton Hefner,
Abigail Anderson, and
Jenny Lundy all hold starting positions in addition to Lalla's contributions. If the Lady Bobcats can clean up their hitting mistakes, they could easily find themselves leading sets more often. That area of the game holds the key to a strong late-season push, as they have been hampered by hitting percentages under .200 for the past two weeks during this losing streak.
Ashlyn McDonald was the big hitter for Alderson Broaddus on Tuesday night; she totaled a game-high twelve kills. The Battlers offense was clicking through their setter Camile Ashby, who had 30 assists. She is statistically one of the more impressive setters in the region, collecting 805 assists so far in 2019.
Wesleyan will get a chance at two MEC opponents this weekend in Buckhannon. The Lady Bobcats play host to 3-6 Concord on Friday at 7 PM, and 4-5 Fairmont State at 1 PM on Saturday.
Alderson Broaddus will look to grab their first GMAC victory on Friday night at Walsh in North Canton, OH.
