Volleyball Suffers Tough Comeback Loss to Concord

Five-set thriller won by the visitors

Buckhannon, WV -- West Virginia Wesleyan Volleyball faced off with Concord on Friday night in front of the home Buckhannon crowd. The Lady Bobcats would quickly jump out to a two set lead, taking the first two frames by scores of 25-23, and 25-21. They were hitting great, and moving the ball around with a purpose throughout the early stages of the match. However, Concord responded well to being down two sets, and came back to win the final three, and pull out the victory.

Wesleyan set a season-high mark in kills and assists on Friday night, and the production was spread throughout the team. TFor the first time all season two Lady Bobcats reached twenty assists, Payton Hefner with 29 and Hannah Jones with 25. Four Lady Bobcats were able to take advantage of Hefner and Jones' superb passing by reaching double-digit kills. Three of the four were freshman, Jenny Lundy, Joelle Lalla, and Kristina Aeschbacher, which has to be exciting for Coach Nancy Wheeler. Junior Lauryn Antolock was the other Wesleyan hitter to reach ten kills. Lalla also impressed with four solo blocks, which along with her twelve kills, were both career highs.

Concord was not as prominent in their hitting as Wesleyan, finishing with 53 kills to Wesleyan's 62, but they were adept at taking advantage of mistakes. They were also difficult to handle when they got on a run of points, which happened multiple times throughout the final three sets. Sheridon Herron was their most efficient offensive player on Friday night, she collected ten kills on a .400 hitting percentage. Jenna Mounts dished out 27 assists, and Lindsay Maddox had 22 kills.

In the decisive fifth set, Concord quickly gained a 7-1 lead. Momentum looked to shift in Wesleyan's favor when they responded with six straight points of their own to even the score 7-7. Howver, Concord buried the Lady Bobcats with clean, crisp play over the remainder of the set to reach the fifteen points first. The encouraging signs out of the Lady Bobcats' freshman class continue to show, and hopefully this performance can energize the team to finish the season strong. They will turn right back around and host Glenville State on Saturday at 1 PM in the Rockefeller Center. The Pioneers have not won a match in Mountain East Conference play, and Wesleyan will look to keep it that way.

Concord will stay in the area on Friday night, as they travel down Route 33 to face Davis & Elkins at 1 PM on Saturday afternoon.
