Buckhannon, WV -- Following a Friday night defeat at the hands of Concord, West Virginia Wesleyan Volleyball got an opportunity on Saturday to play Glenville State. The Lady Pioneers came in 0-10 in conference play, but Coach Tammy Gandee had her girls ready to play. They won the first two sets by scores of 25-13 and 25-16. Wesleyan would rebound strong in the third set, taking it in dominant fashion, 25-12. However, Glenville State would regain their early-match strength and capture the match victory with a fourth set 25-15 win.Â
Despite the loss, it was another solid hitting day for Wesleyan. This weekend featured two of the top team hitting performances of the season for the Lady Bobcats, as they tallied 62 kills on Friday and 49 kills on Saturday. The most productive hitter for Wesleyan on Saturday was
Jenny Lundy. The freshman tied a career-high mark of seventeen kills, and she was efficient with a .333 hitting percentage.
Madison Cooper and
Joelle Lalla also got into double-digits with eleven and ten kills, respectively. The Lady Bobcats again put together a successful setting rotation, this time it was Sophomore
Maddi Carpenter who joined
Payton Hefner with over twenty assists.
Glenville State was led offensively by the combination of Skylar Mace and Karlei Shaver. Mace was incredible in this one, she collected nineteen kills on a .452 hitting percentage, and Shaver got sixteen with a .389 percentage. Sophie Shifferly filled the setter position all match for the Lady Pioneers, and she ended with 34 assists.Â
There will be no travel for 5-18 (2-9) Wesleyan this upcoming week, they will stay in Buckhannon to host Fairmont State on Friday at 7 PM and Frostburg State on Saturday at 10 AM. Both matches will be played at the Rockefeller Center, and feature opponents that are a handful of spots above Wesleyan in the Mountain East Conference standings.
4-20 (1-10) Glenville State will also not have to travel, as they host West Virginia State and Charleston next weekend. Those are two solid opponents who will pose a significant challenge to the Lady Pioneers.
