Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Bobcats Secure Third Seed with Win at D&E

Vasa Wins it with Late Goal

Elkins, WV -- West Virginia Wesleyan Men's Soccer's match at Davis & Elkins on Sunday had major implications for the Mountain East Conference postseason. D&E was already eliminated, however Wesleyan had a chance to grab the third seed in the four-team playoff. The Bobcats came into Sunday holding the fourth seed, and they needed a win, and a loss from Urbana, who was playing at second place Notre Dame. That is exactly the situation that played out, as Wesleyan was victorious 1-0 over D&E, and Urbana lost 2-0 in South Euclid.

Grabbing the third seed was so important for Wesleyan because they now avoid undefeated Charleston in the first round of the MEC Tournament. Finishing the regular season at 12-5-1, and 11-4-1 in conference, the Bobcats secured the third seed and will travel to face Notre Dame on Wednesday. As for Sunday, the match was knotted at 0-0 for the first 85 minutes until Joshua Tenney found Lauri Vasa, who found the back of the net, to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. They would hold on for the final five minutes and take the all-important three points from the match. The sophomore forward came on as a substitute, and he scored his second goal of the week, which were his first goals of the season. The assist was Tenney's sixth point of the week, and he will have a chance at his second MEC Offensive Player of the Week award. Freshman GK Jeremy Collins was not busy, but he made the three saves he needed to when he was called into action. The Bobcats out-shot the Senators 11-8 overall, and 5-3 on goal.

It says a lot about a team to win an important game on the road late in the season, especially against an opponent that was playing with nothing to lose on their senior day. With a balanced scoring attack mainly channeled through Tenney, Luca Falconieri, and Nika Monaselidze, the Bobcats will be a threat for the MEC Championship. They will first have to get through Notre Dame, who they have split the season series with so far. Each team won on their home field, so the Falcons will have the advantage on Wednesday. However, the Bobcats just proved that they can get off the bus and win a big game, so all bets are off when the whistle blows in three days. Coach Gavin Donaldson has been in plenty of these situations in his 28 previous years in this seat, and he will have his team prepared for a 90 minute battle.

Coverage of Wednesday's game will be provided by Notre Dame through Mountain East TV and the Falcons' live stats links. First kick is set for 1 PM in South Euclid, OH.
