Lady Bobcats Advance in MEC Tournament

Goals from Maucere and Fay Push Wesleyan Onward

Buckhannon, WV -- The only Mountain East Conference postseason match in action on Tuesday was in Buckhannon, as second-seeded West Virginia Wesleyan Women's Soccer hosted third-seeded Charleston. The two teams knew that they were going to be in for an interesting match when they showed up to Cebe Ross Field, and saw the plow moving snow off of the turf. The playing field was slippery and uneven all day, but it was no issue for the Lady Bobcats, who put in a goal early, and a goal late, to grab a 2-0 victory.

Early on in the tenth minute, Shannon Shawgo scooped up a Charleston passing error, and turned to take a deep shot. She placed it low far side, but the Charleston keeper made a great diving save. Luckily for the Lady Bobcats, Taylor Maucere was right on the scene to put home the loose ball that came off the goalkeeper. It was the junior's sixth goal of the season, and it gave Wesleyan that all-important early lead in a game that was going to be played carefully by both sides.

There would be an absence of scoring chances the rest of the first half, and part of the way through the second half. Haelly Ramirez changed that when she beat a defender down the sideline, and delivered a dangerous ball into the box. As players jostled for position in front of goal, Ramirez' pass fell at the feet of Kayla Fay, who buried her shot into the back of the net. Her goal came in the 76th minute, and with the playing conditions being what they were, that score effectively ended any ideas of an equalizer for Charleston. The Lady Bobcats would hold on to win, and move on to the next round in the MEC Tournament.

This match was also the seventh in row for Wesleyan without conceding a goal. Chelsea Hubner has been fantastic in net, making 23 saves over that span, and the defense in front of her has not allowed many dangerous scoring chances from opponents. The Lady Bobcats will bring their opportunistic offense, and stout defense, to Fairmont State on Friday night. The Fighting Falcons won the North Division at 11-2-2, and will be playing on their home turf at Duvall-Rosier Stadium. It should turn out to be an exciting matchup between two of the top teams not only in the Mountain East Conference, but in the entire Atlantic Region. First kick is set for 7 PM, and Fairmont State will provide a live broadcast and live stats through Mountain East TV and their athletics website.
