Soccers Combine for 13 Goals in Shutout Victories

Both the Men and Women win big on Wednesday

Buckhannon, WV -- West Virginia Wesleyan Men's and Women's Soccer hosted a doubleheader at Culpepper Soccer Stadium on Wednesday night. It's safe to say it was a great night for both teams, as they combined for thirteen goals, and each preserved a shutout. The Women defeated Wheeling 7-0 in the early game, and the Men closed up the night with a 6-0 victory over Frostburg State. Wednesday also saw four Bobcats and Lady Bobcats score multiple goals, as Shannon Shawgo, Madison LaPole, Makatlyn Tucker, and Nika Monaselidze each found the net twice. The home Black and Orange combined to put 24 shots on goal in the two matches, compared to just seven from their opponents.

Both teams will come out of Wednesday with three very important points. The Lady Bobcats were able to secure a home postseason match next week with their win, and the Men are now closer to securing that vital third-place spot in their Mountain East Conference standings. The Women move up to 11-6 on the season, 9-4 in the MEC, and the Men move up to 11-5-1, 10-4-1 in the MEC.

The Lady Bobcats jumped right into their offense from the opening whistle, hitting the crossbar twice in the first two minutes before Senior Shannon Shawgo gave them a 1-0 lead in the 2nd minute. She would later score again in the 19th minute to give her seven goals on the season. In between Shawgo's goals, fellow Senior Madison LaPole got into the scoring action off a beautiful assist from Haelly Ramirez. LaPole would also score the last goal of the game in the 66th minute, she now has six goals on the season. Sophomore Makatlyn Tucker scored twice in the span of three minutes at the end of the first half, which were her third and fourth goals of the season. Sophomore Casey Underwood would also score her third goal of the season early in the second half. Wednesday was just another day of Chelsea Hubner not allowing any goals, and Bailey Heubi came on as a late substitute and preserved the shutout on a penalty kick.

It was a similar story for the Men against Frostburg State, they waited slightly longer to get into the score column, but they brought the goals in bunches. Even though he only scored one of the six goals, Junior Joshua Tenney was the source of the offense on Wednesday. His vision and passing set up many open opportunities that turned into goals, and he was rewarded with three assists and five total points. Sophomore sensation Nika Monaselidze formed a dynamic tandem with Tenney all night, as both of his goals came off Tenney assists, and he assisted with a nifty pass on Tenney's goal. Javier de Ona Garcia, Sinasi Emre Deniz, and Lauri Vasa were the other Bobcats to beat the keeper, and Vasa's goal was his first of the season. Freshman Jeremy Collins continued his solid first year in-between the pipes in Buckhannon with another shutout.

Both teams with finish their regular-seasons at Davis & Elkins on Sunday. Two more wins will secure each of them solid placements for the MEC postseason tournament that will begin next week. It will be exciting to watch these historic programs attempt to make another deep run towards a championship.
