Baseball Splits with UPJ

Game 3:

Myrtle Beach, SC—The West Virginia Wesleyan College Baseball team will play the final two games of the series this afternoon as they look to find their first win in the regular season against the University of Pitt-Johnstown.

On the mound for the Bobcats would be freshman Michael Maiolo out of Beckley, West Virginia, as he looks to pick up his first career win in a collegiate baseball game.

The Bobcats would be off to a rough start as the Mountain Cats score two in the first inning on just one hit but a dropped fly ball would give them the lead 2-0.

It would be a repeat in the 4th inning as the Bobcats would committ another error which turned into another unearned run for the Mountain Cats, the Bobcats defense would need to sharpen up in the field and wake up their bats if they want a shot to be in this ball game.

In the 5th inning the Bobcats would start to play fundamental baseball as Greg smith would reach on a single, Johnathan Cintron would bunt him over to second base and then Ryan Kiser driving him in. This would be a good start for the Bobcats but only have a couple more innings to tack on some runs. The Bobcats would be down by just 1 run (2-3) going into the 6th inning.

The Bobcats would get their opportunity in the 6th inning with a men on first and third with just 1 out. The Bobcats would put on a squeeze play to try and sneak in the tying run however, the bunt attempt was missed and the runner was out at the play and the Bobcats first base runner tried to go first to third but was thrown out to end the inning which gave the Mountain Lions the momentum to carry out the rest of the game.

The highlight players of the game would be Michael Maiolo who would pitch 6 innings and give up 0 earned runs with 7 strikeouts, Greg Smith (2 for 4) 2B, & 1 run, and Ryan Kiser (1 for 2) 1 RBI & 1 walk.

The final score in 7 innngs would be (2-3) as the Bobcats would need to grab the last game in order to have some momentum as they would go back home. The next game would start 30 minutes after the end of game 3 as the Bobcats would need to find a way to top these Mountain Cats.

Game 4:

Myrtle Beach, SC-- The West Virginia Wesleyan Baseball team would look to grab the last game of the series as the past two games were very close and looked to be going in the Bobcats direction, but just fell short. The Bobcats would come out with the intent to win as they take the field in the first inning.

On the mound for the Bobcats would be senior pitcher Hunter Rotarius from Apopka, Florida as he looks to command his team in their first win of the year.

However, the Bobcats defense would have an error in the 1st inning, which would give UPJ the lead as the Bobcats would look to match in the bottom half. Greg smith would lead off the inning with a double to left field, Johnathan cintron would walk and Ryan Kiser would reach on an error, which would leave the bases loaded for Adrian Delgado. Delgado would reach on an infield single to the shortstop which would tie the ball game at 1 a piece. The Bobcats would fail to bring in any more runs in the 1st inning as the score would remain (1-1).

The Bobcats would take the lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning as Tanner McCallister would reach on a 5 pitch walk and scramble to second on a wild pitch. McCallister would move over to third on a ground ball and eventually score on a wild pitch as the Bobcats would take the lead (2-1).

UPJ would have a big inning in the top of the 3rd as they would tack on 5 runs and the momentum would begin to shift the other direction.

The Bobcats would start to come back in the bottom of the 5th as Greg Smith and Johnathan cintron would both get on base and Ryan Kiser would drive in Smith. Alex Skinner would then come up with runners on 1st and 3rd and single to left field to bring in another run as the score is now (4-6).

In the bottom of the 6th inning, Nick Grotti would start off the rally as he earns a 1 out walk, as well as Greg Smith earning a 4 pitch walk and Johnathan Cintron getting hit by a pitch to load the bases up for Bobcats as Ryan Kiser would step up to the plate. Kiser would reach on a fielders choice as Grotti would come into score as the Bobcats are down by just 1 run with runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs. Adrian Delgado would walk to load the bases as Josh Petit steps to the plate. Smith would score on a wild pitch to tie the game as the Bobcat bench would erupt. Petit would then hit a chopper to short as he legs it out and the Bobcats would take the lead as Kiser would score. The Bobcats would be winning (7-6) going into the top of the 7th inning.

After Dominic Castello shut the Mountain Cats down for 3 1/3 innings, it was Kyle Riggleman's turn to come in and earn the save. The inning started off with an error as the UPJ Moutain Cats have a runner on 1st with 0 outs. The Mountain Cats would move the runner over to 2nd as their is just 1 out in the top of the 7th inning. The next batter would line out to center field to make it two outs as the Bobcats are just 1 out away from their first victory of the year. However, a wild pitch led to the Mountain Cats advancing their runner to 3rd base. Riggleman had the batter in a favorable count as the batter would lace one to 3rd base but Josh Petit would snag it and the Bobcats would win their first game of the season (7-6).

Today's highlight players of game 4 would be Dominic Castello 3 1/3 innings pitched (Win, 0 earned runs & 3 K's), Greg Smith (1 for 3) 2B & 3 runs, Ryan Kiser (1 for 4) 2 runs & 2 RBI's and Kyle Riggleman 1 inning pitched (Save & 0 earned runs).

The Bobcats will be back in action in Florida for their spring break trip in the beginning of March.
