Men's Basketball Falls Short Against UC in Overtime

Buckhannon, WV- West Virginia Wesleyan Men's Basketball was looking for their second conference win in a row when they took on the University of Charleston Golden Eagles on Thursday evening. When the Bobcats faced the Golden Eagles a few weeks back, it resulted in a 76-67 loss. After an exciting game, Wesleyan would fall short by similar score 76-66 in overtime. 

Halfway through the first half, the Golden Eagles held a 13-10 lead, but had a successful next ten minutes would take them into the half up 31-23. Wesleyan would shoot 43% in the first half, but would get up ten less shots than Charleston who had the lead for the whole half.

Five early points and an assist from Luka Petrovic brought Wesleyan within two at the 17:01 mark in the second half.  Wesleyan would tie it up at the 16:42 mark. Charleston would go on a short 6-2 run in the next few minutes, but a Fred Brondsted three pointer would cut the Charleston lead to 1 at the 13:45 mark. 

At the 8:18 mark Wesleyan was still within 1 of the Golden Eagles trailing 52-51 utilizing the three ball to keep the game close. Wesleyan would take their first lead of the game at the 7:32 mark but it would be short lived as the Golden Eagles would score on their next possession to keep a 54-53 lead at the 6:52 mark.  Seconds later, Wesleyan would take their second lead of the half off of a Luka Petrovic layup. Daylin Lee and Clay Todd would score on back to back possessions to give Wesleyan a 59-54 lead with 4:57 left in the game.  

Charleston would tie up the game with a three pointer at the 2:33 mark, but Luka Petrovic would layup with 1:59 would give the Bobcats the lead once again. Charleston would tie it up at 61 with 21 seconds left in the game, and was fouled on the shot. The free throw was no good. Luka Petrovic had a three point attempt with seconds remaining but the shot would fall short, and the game would head to overtime.

Charleston would take the first lead of the overtime at the 4:14 mark. Two free throws on the next possession would put the Charleston lead up to four. Charleston would push the lead to six with 3:10 remaining. After a Wesleyan timeout, Charleston would hit another jump and go up 69-61.  

Wesleyan could not catch momentum in the overtime period and would fall 76-66. 

Wesleyan would have four players in double figures. Daylin Lee would lead the team with 13 points off the bench. Dusan Vicentic was one rebound short of a double double (10 points, 9 rebounds) and Luka Petrovic was one point short of a double double (9 points, 10 assists).  Fred Bronsted had 11 points including three shots from beyond the arc putting up him to 63 made three pointers on the season.

The Bobcats will be back in action this weekend against WV State.
