Wise, VA -- West Virginia Wesleyan rallied from a 0-3 deficit to claim a 4-3 victory in Mountain East conference tennis action here Saturday.
The visiting Lady Bobcats turned the trick by taking the final four singles matches after dropping the doubles point and the top two singles spots.
"It was a great day for the depth of the team and showed the girls are going to fight," said coach
Marc Walters. "Maddie and Rebecca cut their teeth in a must-win situation, on the road, and Mariona came up big in a coin-flip type of match."
Freshmen Maddie Chen and
Rebecca Osborne sealed the deal by winning in straight sets at the #6 and #5 positions, with Osborne taking the clincher.
Sophomore Julia Yanes helped bring Wesleyan closer by winning at #4, drawing the 'Cats to within one point.
Bobcat senior
Mariona Junyer got the comeback started with a do-or-die match at #3 singles, defeating the Cavaliers' Aya Melham 6-4 6-3. Melham had been playing strong tennis coming into the match, and the senior from Spain proved to be up to the task. The two were never separated by more than one break in either set until Junyer broke serve in the final games of each set, and grab the first Bobcat point of the day.
Wesleyan, 7-5 overall and 2-1 MEC, now prepares for a tough week as MEC foes Shepherd (Tuesday) and Fairmont State (Thursday) come to town. They finish the stretch with a trip to Davis and Elkins on Friday.
