Kyrillou, Walters Earn MEC Tennis Honors

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Shepherd's Carter Davis, along with West Virginia Wesleyan's Christos Kyrillou and Marc Walters, took top honors from the Mountain East Conference as the league announced its men's tennis awards and all-conference teams.

Davis, a junior from Harpers Ferry, W.Va., went 12-2 this spring at No. 1 singles for the Rams. He owned key wins in singles this year against both West Virginia Wesleyan and Charleston, and enters this weekend's MEC Tournament on a four-match winning streak. Davis also posted an 8-6 record at No. 1 doubles for the Rams. He has a 3.51 grade-point average majoring in business administration with a concentration in management and a minor in accounting.

Kyrillou, a native of Larnaca, Cyprus, went 12-3 in singles this season for the Bobcats playing as high as No. 2 in singles. He went 5-0 in conference play in singles, and also was 5-0 in doubles against MEC opponents playing at both No. 1 and No. 2.

In his seventh season at West Virginia Wesleyan, Walters earns Coach of the Year for a second-straight year after leading the Bobcats to a second-straight undefeated conference record and a fifth-straight regular season conference title. WVWC has won 20-straight regular season matches against MEC opponents dating back to the 2017 season, and the Bobcats head into this weekend's MEC Tournament as the No. 1 seed. West Virginia Wesleyan has a 13-6 overall record and Walters has his squad poised for a berth in the NCAA Tournament with the team ranked fourth in the most recent NCAA Atlantic Region rankings.

In addition to the award winners, the league also announced the all-conference teams. In addition to Davis, league champion West Virginia Wesleyan had three players named to the first team in Carlos Dodero, Lukas Laipold and Maycon Santos Dias. Charleston's Alek Gracin and Ben Lakeman also earned first team honors, along with Fairmont State's Lucas Alves and West Liberty's Camilo Moncayo.

The second team consists of Kyrillou, West Virginia Wesleyan's Alexander Lyudinovskiy and Harry Simaioforidis, Fairmont State's Joao Martins and Guilherme Pachane, West Liberty's Anton Schulz and Mauk Smit and Charleston's Joao Tayar. The All-MEC teams and awards are selected by a vote of the league's coaches.
