Charleston,WV-- The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats would take on the University of Charleston for their second conference game of the year. The Bobcats are still searching for their first win as the Golden Eagles have an overall record of 1-1. Last year the Bobcats would take down the Golden Eagles in an exiting home contest last year, as they look to do the same on the road this year.
In the first half it would be all Golden Eagles as they would score 17 unanswered points as the Bobcat offense would struggle to gain yardage.
In the second half the Bobcat defense would let another touchdown up as the score would be 24-0. The Bobcats would need to find some their stride this half in order to keep it close.
Michael Sawyer of the Bobcats defense would get something going, as he would block UC's punt and return it for a 20 yard touchdown.
Briar Wilfong would then complete the pass to
Ridge Stokes for the two point conversion as the Bobcats would have some life. (24-8)
UC would go on to answer with a field goal but the Bobcats were not done.
Jarrett Northrop would march his team down the field in 9 play and 70 yards for another score. This time it would be
Lawrence Brown punching in the touchdown with a 3 yard rush. (27-15)
The Golden Eagles would tack on the last touchdown of the night, as they would complete a pass for 74 yards. The Golden Eagles would keep the momentum as the score would be 34-15 with just under 14 minutes left in the game.
The Bobcats would march down the field in under 3 minutes as
Jarrett Northrop would distribute the ball to his receivers.
Devin Taylor would be the one to snag the 9 yard touchdown pass from Northrop with 10 minutes left on the clock. The Bobcats would also punch in the two point conversion as
Lawrence Brown would reach the end zone making it 34-23.
The Bobcat defense would force the Golden Eagles to punt and the Bobcats would take advantage. Northrop would start the drive completing a pass to
Derek Drapen and
Kord Jenkins would get in on the action with a 15 yard rush.
Northrop would find
Tre Gulley for a 42 yard touchdown which would put the Bobcats within 5 points.
Jarrett Northrop's pass for the two point conversion would be broken up as the Bobcats would be down 5 with less than 7 minutes to go.
The Bobcats would have two more opportunities to capitalize but the Golden Eagle defense would shut them down. The Bobcats would lose a close game 34-29.
Jarrett Northrop would go 19-46 with 251 yards in the air with 2 touchdowns.
Derek Drapen and
Devin Taylor would each receive for over 80 yards. On the defensive side of the ball,
John Merica would continue to be a huge impact for the Bobcats as he would pick up a total of 10 tackles.
