West Virginia Wesleyan Softball opened their 2020 season this past weekend with four games in a tournament at Glenville State. The weekend resulted in three wins, starting with game one, in which the Lady 'Cats defeated Shepherd 7-4. The second game was an eight-inning thriller, which eventually ended in a 4-3 Mansfield victory after teams had to place a runner at second to start the eighth inning. The Lady 'Cats opened Sunday with a 4-2 victory over Mercyhurst, and they defeated Shepherd for the second time in two days in the final game, 10-4.Â
The offense star of the weekend was Sophomore
Destiny Alvarado. The Illinois native picked up where she left off after a promising freshman season, going seven for eleven on the weekend (.636) with a home run and eight runs batted in. For her performance, she was honored with the Mountain East Conference Player of the Week.
Hannah Hudson also picked up two wins in the circle, throwing fourteen innings in two complete game victories over Shepherd and Mercyhurst. She also struck out ten and had an opposing batting average of .228.
Joining Alvarado on the offensive side were
Lauren Niglio,
Grace Smith,
Kennedy Cowart, and
Alli Robinson. All five Lady 'Cats collected four-plus hits on the weekend, and
Alli Robinson belted a home run against Mansfield with Alvarado.
Ciana Bowen picked up the third win for Coach
Steve Warner's team in game four against Shepherd.

What's Next
The Lady 'Cats leave for their Spring Break Trip to Florida on Friday morning, and they play their first game against the University of the Sciences on Saturday. They will play fourteen games on the trip.
