Men's Basketball Preview: West Virginia State & Charleston

Wesleyan men's basketball stays at home before hitting the road again for a weekend clash at Charleston.

The Basics
The West Virginia Wesleyan men's basketball team is scheduled to play host to West Virginia State on Wednesday (Jan. 20) at 7:30 p.m. before travelling to Charleston on Saturday (Jan. 23) to take on the Golden Eagles at 4:30 p.m. 
 
Quick Hits
• Sophomore guard Jaylin Reed is the team's leading scorer averaging 16.8 points per game. Reed scored 21 points against Glenville State on Saturday (Jan. 16) and delivered a career-high 22 points on Jan. 10 at Frostburg State. 
• Senior forward Ross Young scored a season-high 20 points on Saturday (Jan. 16) against Glenville State. Young has already registered a pair of double-doubles this season (Jan. 10 at Frostburg State and Jan. 13 at Concord). 
• Senior guard Jaret Mullooly has made four 3-pointers in two games this season (Jan. 7 vs. Fairmont State and Jan. 13 at Concord). 
• Nick Patella enters his second season as the West Virginia Wesleyan head coach. Prior to WVWC, Patella served as the head coach of nearby Davis & Elkins for four years. The Elkins, W. Va., native played basketball at West Virginia University under John Beilein from 2002-05 and was a member of the 2004-05 Mountaineers Elite Eight team. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at WVWC. 
• Wesleyan went toe-to-toe with undefeated Glenville State (4-0), but the Pioneers pulled away in the second half to win by a score of 106-85 at the Rockefeller Center in the Bobcats' last contest. 
 
Scouting West Virginia State
The Yellow Jackets were selected to finish third in the 2020-21 Mountain East Conference preseason poll and are off to a 3-1 start to the campaign. WVSU has won three straight games after losing its season opener versus Glenville State, 117-114 on Jan. 7. 
 
Anthony Pittman is the reigning MEC Player of the Week after posting a pair of double-doubles last week. He tallied 11 points and hauled in 12 rebounds in a win over Notre Dame (Ohio). Pittman followed that up by posting just the ninth 20/20 game in MEC men's basketball history with 24 points and 20 rebounds against Alderson Broaddus. The sophomore is averaging 12.0 rebounds per game. 
 
Glen Abram is averaging 25.5 points a night through four games. He dropped a season-high 31 points on Jan. 13 at home against Notre Dame (Ohio). 
 
Bryan Poore enters his 22nd season as the head coach at West Virginia State. Poore is the winningest coach in Yellow Jacket men's basketball program history with a 327-268 record since taking over in 1999. 
 
Scouting Charleston
The Golden Eagles are 2-2 to begin the season and have won two games in a row following an 83-60 victory at Notre Dame (Ohio) on Saturday, Jan. 16. 
 
Lamont McManus is the current Charleston leading scorer at 12.8 points per game followed by Seth O'Neal, who averages 12.3 points a contest. O'Neal also leads the Golden Eagles with 20 assists. 
 
Dwaine Osborne enters his eighth season as the helm of the Charleston men's basketball program. Prior to Charleston, Osborne served as the head coach at Texas-Permian Basin for four seasons. Osborne carries a 136-78 record as head coach of the Golden Eagles.

West Virginia Wesleyan men's basketball is scheduled to continue its MEC slate next week at Notre Dame (Ohio) on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. before returning home to battle Alderson Broaddus on Saturday, Jan. 30 for a 4:30 p.m. tipoff.
